Tingey, Harriott, Adams and Walker combine to set new school record

AUSTIN, Texas – Drew Tingey, Ian Harriott, Sean Adams and Shaquille Walker combined to set a new school record in the 1600-meter sprint medley relay at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays Friday in Austin, Texas.

“We were pretty excited and optimistic going in to the race,” BYU sprinting coach Kyle Grossarth said. “We felt like we could run well and have a good shot at winning. To win the race, run the time that we did and set the school record was definitely a surprise. We were all very excited.”

The relay team’s time of 3:14.74 was not only a school record, it was good enough to take first place by over one second in a crowded field of top competition.

After qualifying for and competing at nationals, Anginae Monteverde put in another strong performance in the pole vault clearing 4.10 meters. Monteverde’s mark was 10th overall at the meet, but places her eighth all-time on BYU’s career-best top 10 list in the outdoor pole vault.

The men’s and women’s track and field teams were split between three meets over the weekend. Other than Texas, BYU had athletes participating at the UVU Invitational at Utah Valley University, and the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State.

At UVU, Chloe Richardson took first in the women’s high jump clearing a career-high, 1.75 meters. In the triple jump, Richardson took home second place jumping 11.82 meters.

Blake Steeves placed first in the men’s long jump and triple jump with marks of 7.15 meters and 14.27 meters, respectively. Steeves’ long jump performance was a career-best.

The Cougars took first and second in the men’s 400 meters with Mario Harper’s time of 47.72, and Jesse White’s time of 48.87.

Other notable performances were second place finishes by Ellie Heiden in the 400 meters, Aimee Bryson in the 800 meters, Jennifer Bandley in the long jump and Scott Matheson in the long jump.

The Aztec Invitational provided a couple more highlights with Zachary Blackham, Jefferson Jarvis and Sierra Hansen taking home first-place finishes.

Blackham cleared 2.20 meters in the high jump placing him seventh all-time on BYU’s top 10 list.

Jarvis’s throw of 50.85 meters in the discus was a new career-best, while Sierra Hansen’s vault of 3.87 meters set a new career high for an outdoor event.  

The Cougars will compete again next week at the Stanford Invitational April 3-4.
