Men's and Women's Teams Have Good Performances in Weekend Meets

MESA -- The BYU men's and women's track and field teams had a busy weekend with athletes from both teams competing in three different meets in Ogden, Utah and Mesa, Ariz..

At the Wildcat Invitational in Ogden, Utah, the men had strong performances in the field events. Montrell Dunn took fourth place with a triple jump distance of 45-10.25. Teammate Joe Dredge took fifth place in the same event with a distance of 44-06.00. Also placing fourth place was Spencer Smith in the men's javelin. Smith had a throw of 190-09.00.

Men's head coach Mark Robison said his team is in good shape.

"We want to get guys qualified for regionals at each event we participate in. We have been fortunate to have our guys healthy and avoiding injuries, which really helps."

Other Cougar runners were participating in the Mesa Classic at Mesa Community College on Friday night and the Sun Angel Invitational at Arizona State's Joe Selleh Track.

Nathan Robison placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51:04. Robison just missed qualifying for a regional mark. Teammate Matt Anderson jumped 48-02 in the triple jump for a lifetime best.

"There is some great competition at this meet," said Robison. "We had a chance to compete against some teams from our conference and we did very well against them."

Robison said the team not compete next week off and then willl come back and work hard for the upcoming meets.

Meanwhile, the women were competing at the same meets in Arizona with equally impressive results.

The 800-meter run proved to be the strongest area for the women runners. Kassi Andersen and Jaime Cottle took first and second, respectively, with both runners running under 2:09:00.

The jumps provided the team with some strong finishes as well. Kristen McGregor set a personal best of 38-5.5 in the triple jump. Lindsey Metcalf was second in the high jump and equaled her best jump of the year.

Women's head coach Craig Poole said the meet was a good chance for him to see how his team would compete against good competition.

"We are making good progress. We are getting some personal bests and getting ready for some big meets in the future," said Poole.

All times are unofficial and the Sun Angel Invitational was still in progress at deadline.
