Eight Event Wins at Twilight

OGDEN -- Chilly weather conditions at the Wildcat Twilight Open meet on the campus of Weber State University did not prevent the BYU women’s track and field team from recording eight event victories and several more top three finishes.

Freshman Michaelanne Laurent led the way for the Cougars in the 1500m, finishing first in 4:37.92. Sarah Yingling came in a close second (4:38.26) while Candace Eddy came in third in 4:38.42. Fellow Cougars Megan Chipman, Lisa Drury and Talya Kussee rounded out the top six spots in the event.

The 100m dash was also a successful event for BYU, with senior Mindy McClurkin (12.09) taking the top spot and junior Porshe Giddings nabbing second (12.51). Emily Page finished sixth (13.15), Ashleigh Jameson seventh (13.16) and Erica Shields ninth (13.40).

In the 400m, sophomore Nachelle Stewart dominated, winning the race in 56.19, which was more than two seconds faster than any other competitor. Ashley Nichols took sixth in the event in 1:01.59.

Angela Wagner (2:08.98) and Katie Palmer-Cox (2:09.48) took first and second, respectively, in the 800m run. Nicole Clark also competed in the event, taking fifth in 2:12.47.

Sophomore Diana Blauer finished first in the high jump with a height of 1.71m (5-07.25) and was followed by teammate Ashley Dziendziel at 1.66m (5-05.25). Freshman Taylor Stapley finished fourth at 1.61m (5-03.50).

The Cougars took the top two spots in the javelin, with Sarah Lancaster winning with a toss of 43.45m (142-06.75) and Allyson Wardell taking second at 41.28m (135-05.25). Also placing in the top six were Coriann Clark in fourth, Julie Larson in fifth and Amber Freeman in sixth.

Other victories in the field events for the Cougars came from Melissa Keltner in the triple jump and Shanie Bushman in the pole vault. Keltner jumped 11.52m (37-09.50) and Bushman vaulted 3.50m (11-06.00).
