PROVO, Utah—BYU’s Nachelle Mackie has been named to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 First Team for women’s track and field and cross country.

Mackie, a junior from Spanish Fork, Utah, is studying elementary education and has maintained a 3.93 GPA.

Mackie was the lone Cougar to win a national title at this years indoor track and field championships in the 800m with a time of 2:03.30, a time that was not only a new school record but also the fastest time of the season in the NCAA.

After a successful indoor season, Mackie has continued her recorded setting into the outdoor season.  At the Mt. SAC Relays in April, Mackie ran the fastest time of her career in the 800-meters, finishing in 2:01.11, her personal best time by nearly two seconds. In a heat comprised of seven professional athletes and no other collegians, Mackie finished second and was closing on the leader on the final straightaway.

Mackie was named an MPSF All-Academic Scholar-Athlete, earned First Team All-America honors and the Mountain Region Women’s Track Athlete of the Year.

With the outdoor national championships just around the corner, Mackie looks to finish off an outstanding season after qualifying last weekend at the NCAA Track and Field West Preliminary Round in Texas.  Mackie finished first in the 800m with a time of 2:02.64.

The 2012 Capital One Academic All‐District Women’s Track/Cross Country Teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.  Athletes are recognized as the nation’s top student‐athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
