BYU Drops Two Matches at Cougar Challenge

Allison Larson and Lexi Brown named to All-Tournament Team

PULLMAN -- After winning its season opener Friday, the No. 23 BYU women's volleyball team dropped two matches Saturday at the 13th Annual Les Schwab Cougar Classic. The Cougars lost 22-30, 29-31, 31-29, 30-27, 4-15 to Nevada and 15-30, 23-30, 21-30 to host Washington State.

In a morning tilt, the Cougars dropped the first two games before storming back, but the Wolfpack proved to be too much in the deciding game.

"They were a good service team," Lamb said. "But we hurt ourselves by making a lot of hitting errors."

Nevada outhit BYU .188 to .128, and in the crucial fifth game, the Cougars managed only three kills and a -.227 attack percentage.

Senior Allison Larson led BYU for the second match in a row with a career-high 17 kills (.256). April Varner recorded 14 kills and 19 digs for her second consecutive double-double.

Numerous Cougars recorded career-highs against the Wolfpack. Defensive specialists Uila Crabbe and Michelle Mahaffey had 21 and 14 digs, respectively. Lindsey Metcalf also notched highs of 14 digs and eight blocks, Carrie Bowers had a high of 12 kills and Lexi Brown continued her solid blocking with a high of 12 blocks.

As a team the Cougars easily outblocked Nevada, as they had a 19-9 advantage over the Wolfpack.

In the final match of the tournament, Washington State swept BYU on the strength of its dominant service game. Washington State recorded nine service aces, while forcing BYU into nine service return errors.

Allison Larson led BYU with seven kills, and has led the team in kills in all three matches this season. Washington State outhit BYU .146 to -.036.

While BYU struggled to get its offensive game into gear, its blocking continues to be strong. BYU outblocked Washington State 11.5 to 7 and has outblocked all of its opponents this season. Carrie Bowers led BYU with a career-high nine blocks.

BYU's Larson and Brown were named to the Cougar Challenge All-Tournament Team, while LaToya Harris of Washinton State was named tournament MVP. Host Washington State won the tournament with a 3-0 record, followed by Nevada (2-1), BYU (1-2) and Gonzaga (0-3).

The Cougars will return home to host the BYU Mizuno Classic next week. BYU will open against No. 3 University of Southern California at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Smith Fieldhouse.
