Cougars Offensive in Sweep of Wolverines
PROVO -- In its most efficient night of the season, the BYU women's volleyball team used an all-around attack to stifle Utah Valley State College 3-0 (30-18, 30-26, 30-24) Friday night in the Smith Fieldhouse. The Cougars push their winning streak to four matches and improve to 8-3, while the Wolverines drop to 2-7.
In only the second meeting between the two teams and first since 1982, BYU overwhelmed UVSC to start the match and hit a season-high .422 in cruising to the victory. The game was played in front of 2,086 fans, the Cougars' largest home crowd of the season.
"I was concerned about this team," BYU coach Karen Lamb said. "We treated them with respect, as we should have, because they are going to compile some quality wins this season."
The Cougars were paced by a match-high 16 kills from Kim Wilson, who also carried a .538 hitting percentage.
"That's my job," Wilson said. "Whether or not there's a good pass or a good set, my job is to put the ball away. This year, we're really coming together and playing as a team, and I'm excited about playing every match."
In the early going of the first game, the two teams traded points, as the score remained close. With BYU up 15-13, consecutive kills by Lindsy Lewis-Hartsock and Carrie Bowers, followed by a Lauren Richards ace forced the Wolverines into a timeout and gave the Cougars it's largest advantage at 20-15. BYU would finish out the game on a 10-2 run on the strength of three kills by Wilson and four attack errors by UVSC. BYU hit a match-high .516 in the game.
In game two, UVSC would jump out to a quick 3-0 lead on a kill by Deise Borghetti and two BYU errors. Melanie Togo then entered the game in a service substitution and proceeded to serve four times and spur the Cougars on a 5-0 run, capped by a pair of kills by Lindsey Metcalf. The Cougars would stretch their lead to 21-14 and would lead the rest of the way, but the Wolverines kept fighting back and kept the game close. Wilson and Metcalf led BYU in the game with six kills each.
The Cougars were up throughout the third game and jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead, as Lexi Brown picked up two kills. BYU was up by as many as seven points in the game, but couldn't pull away any further as UVSC kept fighting back. Wilson picked up five kills in the game to keep the Cougars ahead of the Wolverines. Former Wolverine Mandi Kiholm, who played in the second and third games, teamed with Lewis-Hartsock to stuff Krystal Peterson to seal the match.
The Cougars held a 10.5-1 blocking advantage over the Wolverines and out-hit them .422 to .196. The 52 kills by BYU marks the most in a three-game match this season. It is the second BYU sweep of the season and first since it swept Rutgers on Aug. 29.
Bowers hit a career-high .643 with nine kills and no attack errors to go with five digs and three blocks. Metcalf also put down nine kills with a .300 attack percentage. Brown entered the match in the second game and proceeded to hit a career-best .455 with five kills. Richards had another all-around match with 42 assists, four blocks, two digs and one ace.
"We hit very well tonight," Lamb said. "I was pleased with Lindsey Metcalf's .300 percentage and we had some excellent performances by Kim and Carrie."
UVSC was led by Kassidy Brotherson, who had 14 kills while hitting .591.
The Cougars will be in action again Saturday at 3 p.m. against Nevada (6-6) in the Smith Fieldhouse.
