Balanced Cougars Sweep Lobos
ALBUQUERQUE -- In one of its most offensively efficient nights of the year, the BYU women's volleyball team opened its Mountain West Conference road schedule by sweeping past New Mexico 3-0 (30-18, 30-28, 30-25) Thursday night. With the win the Cougars improve to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in the MWC, while the Lobos fall to 3-12, 0-2.
The Cougars employed everybody in their lineup, except for backup setter Jenna Judkins, and received contributions from all who played.
"Everyone that came in tonight made a contribution," BYU coach Karen Lamb said. "We served and passed well, which made us a crisp offensive team."
Game one was all Cougars, as BYU set the tone for the night by hitting a match-high .417, while holding New Mexico to a match-low .069. BYU hit .350 and .333 in games two and three, respectively to sustain its offensive output.
BYU was led on the night by sophomore outside hitter Kim Wilson's match-high 11 kills and team-high .579 attack percentage. Senior rightside hitter Carrie Bowers put down nine kills with two aces, five digs and two blocks to help power the BYU offense.
Junior outside hitters April Varner and Lindsey Metcalf each chipped in with six kills apiece. Sophomore middle blocker Lexi Brown played in the final two games, and picked up five kills and two blocks.
Defensively, the Cougars were led by Uila Crabbe's match-high nine digs and Laura Nielsen's match-high three blocks.
The Lobos were led by Jennifer Heasty, who collected 11 kills on 14 attempts.
BYU out-hit New Mexico .363-.176. The Cougars also posted 10 aces and out-blocked the Lobos 7-3.5.
The Cougars will face Air Force Friday at 7 p.m. to conclude their road trip.
"We have to stay focused for Air Force," Lamb said. "They are playing well this year and I know they'll be pumped up to play us."
