Metcalf Leads Cougar Sweep of Rebels

LAS -- Embarked on its final Mountain West Conference road swing, and in prelude to the MWC Tournament next week, the BYU women's volleyball team swept through UNLV 3-0 (30-21, 30-21, 30-25) Friday night at the Cox Pavilion. The win improves the Cougars to 19-7 overall and 9-4 in the MWC, while the Rebels fall to 11-15, 4-9.

Junior outside hitter Lindsey Metcalf was the lone Cougar with double-digit kills, as she posted a match-high 12. She also tied for a match-high with five blocks, including two solos.

"We blocked well, we served well and we dug well," BYU coach Karen Lamb said. "We took charge of the match and stayed in charge. UNLV is a talented team, but made plays when we needed to."

Senior libero put up a match-high 19 digs to give her 1,029 career digs. She needs 24 digs to pass Caroline Bower for fifth all-time at BYU.

The No. 11 blocking team in the nation entering the week, with a 3.08 blocks per game average, BYU out-blocked UNLV 11.0-9.5 on the night. Senior middle blocker matched Metcalf by also chipping in five blocks.

"We got blocking hands on a lot of ball tonight," Lamb said. "It was important that we served the ball well too, because that gave us an edge in the passing game."

The Cougars had more aces than service errors, and were led by sophomore setter Lauren Richards who used her jump serve to put down a match-high four aces.

BYU will conclude its MWC regular season schedule with a match at San Diego State Saturday at 8 p.m. (MST). The match will be played on the campus of SDSU at Peterson Gym.

A winner of 20-matches in 28 of the past 29 seasons, the Cougars will seek to win their 20th match of the season against the Aztecs.

"It was nice to start our weekend this way," Lamb said. "SDSU is a tough team that we will have to be focused for to beat."
