PROVO -- In front of an energized crowd at the Smith Fieldhouse, the BYU women’s volleyball team (11-10, 5-4 MWC) gave fans a reason to cheer with a four-set victory over Utah Valley University (16-8, 6-1 Great West) 25-22, 30-28, 15-25, 25-23.

"It was a great volleyball match on both sides," BYU head coach Shay Goulding said. "We responded well, staying lucid and continuing to battle every point."

Christie Carpenter led the Cougars in kills with 12 while Camilla Phillips tallied career highs in both kills (10) and blocks (seven). Melissa Lake Wright tallied 16 digs in the libero position and setter Kiana Rogers had her eighth double-double of the season with 38 assists and 11 digs.

The Cougars struck first to begin set one, but UVU responded quickly to tie things up. At 9-8, the Wolverines started to pull away with two-point runs, leading BYU by four at 16-12. Momentum favored neither team as the two sides exchanged blows for most of the set.

With a .440 hitting percentage for the set, the home team regained the lead at 19-18. Utah Valley kept things close until a three-point run brought the Cougars to game point. A kill by Casey Speredon Thurston, playing in her first game since Sept. 19, gave BYU the first set 25-22.

"It was nice to have all our players back," said Goulding referring to Phillips, Thurston and Walker who have recently been injured.

UVU made sure the second set began differently than the first with a 6-0 run to start play. The determined Cougars mounted a comeback but were unable to catch the Wolverines until a block by Camilla Phillips tied things up at 17 all.

Two service aces by Morgan Lloyd Sorenseon gave BYU a two-point lead, their first of the set. Again, Utah Valley made things difficult for the Cougars taking back the advantage at 26-25. The Wolverines seemed to have won the set 28-26 but a disputed call put BYU back in the match.

A kill by Christie Carpenter, her 10th of the night, put the score at 29-28 before Nicole Warner secured the set for the Cougars with a kill of her own.

The Wolverines looked like a different team in the third set sprinting away with the lead after two five-point runs. BYU was quickly down 20-9 but recovered their composure after a timeout and scored four unanswered point. The deficit proved too large though and UVU forced the match to a fourth set after winning 25-15.

Fourth set play showed just how well matched the two teams were with the score going back and forth. Each squad had a five-point run in the set as well as 11 kills for BYU and 12 for UVU. In the end, another block by Phillips notched the win 25-23. The junior had a career-high night, tallying seven blocks.

Kayli Broadbent led the Wolverines in kills with 23 and Chelsea Fa’alogo recorded a .538 hitting percentage. Carpenter registered 12 kills on the night to take the lead for BYU.

The women’s volleyball team will be back in action Thursday against conference opponent UNLV. The match begins at 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse. It is the DIG PINK breast cancer awareness match and the first 500 fans will receive a free pink t-shirt.
