PROVO, Utah – BYU men’s tennis dropped its final regular-season match against West Coast Conference foe No. 18 University of San Diego by a score of 4-0 Saturday.
The Toreros (20-4, 9-0) got on the board quickly after doubles to take a 1-0 lead. David Ball and Aidan Carrazedo fell 6-1 at No. 3 doubles to open the match and Francis Sargeant and Juan Canales were beaten 6-3 at No. 2 doubles as San Diego clinched the point.
The Toreros won three singles matches in straight sets to close out the match and the WCC regular season. Jeremy Bourgeois dropped his match 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles, Canales lost 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5, and Jacob Sullivan fell at No. 3 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). Sargeant, who was the lone senior being honored on senior day, was playing in the third set against No. 45 Uros Petronijevic when the match was called.
The Cougars (9-17, 3-6) head into the WCC tournament next week on their longest losing streak of the season, having lost eight consecutive matches and nine of the last 10. The tournament begins next Wednesday in San Diego.
PROVO, Utah – BYU men’s tennis is set to host No. 18 San Diego on Saturday in its final home match of the season and final match of West Coast Conference play.
The Cougars (9-16, 3-5) look to snap their longest losing streak of the season, having lost their last seven matches, against the No. 1 team in the WCC. Senior captain, Francis Sargeant, will be honored Saturday before the match begins as he prepares to play his last home match for BYU after an illustrious career as a Cougar. Sargeant rose to No. 6 on BYU’s all-time singles victory list this season playing primarily at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles.
The Toreros (19-4, 8-0) have already clinched the WCC regular season title for the second consecutive year but will need to beat the Cougars to maintain their perfect conference record. No. 45 Uros Petronijevich and No. 70 Filip Vittek lead San Diego in singles and Vittek joins forces with Jordan Angus to be the No. 42 doubles duo in the nation.
