BYU Defeats Weber State, Opens Season 2-0
PROVO, Utah – BYU men’s tennis cruised to a 6-1 victory over Weber State at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts Saturday.
“It's exciting to play against Weber State,” said BYU head coach Dave Porter. “Brad Ferreira, their coach, has been a good friend for a long time. It was their first match of the season, so we feel fortunate that we had at least one under our belt. We feel like we played a little bit better this week than last week, and we hope that it'll prepare us to go up to Oregon this coming week. I'm happy with the result, of course, and also happy with the effort that the guys gave. We still have a lot of things we've got to learn to be the kind of team we can be, but we're moving in the right direction.”
The Cougars (2-0) opened the match earning the doubles point over the Wildcats (0-1). Sean Hill and Jack Barnett defeated Michiel Van Schoor and Brendan Baar in No. 3 doubles, 6-0. In No. 1 doubles, the Wildcats’ Kris Van Wyk and Bo-Han Li beat Mateo Vereau Melendez and Matheus Ferreira Leite, 6-3. Sam Tullis and Ben Gajardo sealed it for BYU with an exciting 7-5 win against Arthur Serafim and Sebastian Buxman in No. 2 doubles.
Barnett made quick work of Serafim at No. 2 singles, picking up a 6-3, 6-0 win. Hill followed at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Van Wyk. Tullis then earned a win at the No. 3 slot, beating Li 6-4, 7-5.
Weber State picked up its lone win of the match at No. 3 singles with Sebastian Buxman beating Mateo Vereau Melendez 7-6 (5), 6-4. Gajardo beat Van Schoor in a 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (9) thriller at No. 5 singles, and Dominik Jakovljevic closed it out for the Cougars with a 6-2, 6-4 No. 6 singles win.
The Cougars will hit the road for a two-match series with Oregon on Friday, Jan. 29, at 3 p.m. PST, and Saturday, Jan. 30, at 12 p.m. PST. The matches will be played at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene and can be watched via live stream. A link is provided in the schedule.
