COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Chase Dalton and Joshua Weirich took first and second place in the heptathlon with the second and fourth-best scores in school history at the Air Force Invitational.
“The meet has been very good and the kids have performed well,” associated head coach Mark Robison said. “For the most part we did well. Obviously the highlights were Chase and Josh. We are progressing and kids are staying healthy and performing well. "
Dalton set personal bests in four of the seven events and was just eight points away from the top heptathlon score in school history. Weirich set two personal bests; in the 60-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles.
Mario Harper and Korey Smith finished second and third in the 400 meters in 48.90 and 48.98, respectively. Zach Blackham led the Cougars in the high jump, finishing second overall with a mark of 2.12m (6 feet 11.5 inches). Braydon Bringhurst had another strong meet, tying for second in pole vault by clearing 17 feet 10.5 inches.
Alex Ashworth turned in a solid performance, winning the triple jump with a mark of 14.59 meters. He also finished second in the long jump at 7.09 meters. Scott Matheson’s 7.07-meter mark was good enough to take third in the long jump.
The Cougars next compete at the Washington Invitational in Seattle next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
PROVO, Utah—BYU men’s track and field continues its indoor season this weekend with a trip to Colorado Springs, Colo., to compete in the 24th Air Force Invitational.
“We are looking forward to another good weekend and we hope we can build on last week,” head coach Ed Eyestone said. “All of our events are looking stronger. This is a great opportunity for our multi-event guys. We expect big things from Chase Dalton and Joshua Weirich.”
Dalton has been a standout performer for the Cougars and looks to continue his great start to the season in the heptathlon. Weirich is also a strong contributor and looks to place high in the heptathlon. Braydon Bringhurst hopes to improve on last weekend’s clearance of 18 feet, a new personal best, netting him a first-place finish in the pole vault at the Lobo Invitational.
Craig Merkely and Zachary Stetler should lead the Cougars in the weight throw and shot put, respectively, after great showings last weekend where both posted personal bests. Korey Smith leads the BYU sprinters after strong performances in the first two meets of the indoor season.
The meet begins Thursday afternoon with multi-events, which continue into Friday morning, followed by many field event finals. There are qualifying heats for the 400 meters, mile, 200 meters, 800 meters and the distance medley final Friday afternoon. Saturday’s slate begins at 10 a.m. MST with field events. The rest of the day is filled with running events.
