SAN -- The BYU men’s track team got its outdoor season rolling at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, Calif. Several athletes took their performances outdoor for the first time and put together solid performances.

“We did pretty well,” head coach Mark Robison said. “It is tough to transition from indoor to outdoor so to do as well as we did is amazing.”

The Cougars had two decathletes compete in the unique-to-outdoor multi-event. Freshmen Joshua Weirich (6324 points) and Isaac Robison (5535) put in solid performances in their first outdoor meet, earning third and fourth place, respectively.

Senior Oliver Whaley won the hammer throw with a toss of 62.21m (204-01). Freshman Clinton Prestwich finished fifth in the men’s open competition of the discus throw. Prestwich went for a throw of 44.04m (144-06).

BYU’s long jumpers showed well, nabbing fourth, fifth and seventh place finishes. Freshman Drew Tingey led the way with a 7.06m (23-02.00) and senior Aaron Powell jumped 6.97m (22-10.50). Junior Kyle Mills got the seventh spot with a mark of 6.78m (22-03.00).

In another outdoor-exclusive event, junior Josh Adams ran his first 3000-meter steeplechase of the season and finished third with a time of 9:14.62. Sophomore Travis Fuller also competed in the 1500-meter run and also grabbed a third-place finish in 3:50.93

Freshman Benjamin Johnston ran the 1500-meter also, along with sophomore Ryan Jones. Johnston came in fifth place with a time of 3:52.10 and Jones right behind him in sixth in a time of 3:53.61.

BYU’s 4x100 relay team took home a second-place finish in a time of 41.82, with junior James Ghormley, freshman Jordan Magnusson, freshman Mario Harper and senior Aaron Powell anchoring the team. In the 4x400 relay, the Cougars took second again, this time junior Steven Hart, sophomore James Derek McAllister, freshman Mark Carlson and sophomore Sean Adams finished in a time of 3:14.32.

Adams finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.01 and Carlson took sixth with a time of 54.16.

Up next, BYU will prepare for the Stanford Invitational next weekend in Palo Alto, Calif.

PROVO -- After a record-setting indoor season, the BYU track teams will be starting outdoor season this weekend at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, Calif.

With several different events available in the outdoor season, many athletes will be seeing their first competition of the year including a lot of freshman getting started.

"There's a good group going," men's head coach Mark Robison said. "It will be a good meet with good competition."

BYU will see quality programs such as Texas A&M, Wisconsin, UCLA and Kansas State.

Two freshman decathletes will compete for the Cougars, Isaac Robison and Joshua Weirich. Weirich competed in the heptathlon during indoor season and finished sixth at the Mountain West Conference Championships.

Outdoor season will feature unique outdoor field events such as the hammer throw, discus and javelin. Freshman Clinton Prestwich will compete in both the hammer throw and discus.

The BYU women will have six athletes competing in the javelin for the first time in 2011. Elizabeth Wilson, Erin Wells, Aubri Salazar, Coriann Clark, Amber Freeman and Allyson Wardell will all compete in the event on Saturday.

Athletes that competed at the NCAA National Championships on March 11-12 will take the weekend off and not attend the meet. Lacey Bleazard, Katie Palmer, Rachel Fisher and others will begin outdoor competition later in March.
