SAN DIEGO -- The fourth-ranked BYU men's volleyball team completed a two match sweep at UC San Diego on Wednesday, blanking the Tritons, 30-28, 30-25, 30-24. The win marks the 10th straight for the Cougars, improving their record to 21-5, 15-5 on the season.
During the current 10-match win streak, which dates back to March 8, the Cougars have posted an impressive 30-3 single-game record (.910).
All-American Mike Wall and senior outside hitter Joaquin Acosta tag-teamed for 24 of the Cougars' 45 kills against the Tritons. Wall recorded a match-high 13 kills on the night, hitting 13-of-20 with just three errors (.500). Defensively, BYU held UC San Diego to a .152 average at the net, forcing 25 errors. The Cougars out-blocked the Tritons, 11-6, led by middle blocker Rafael Paal. Paal recorded a match-high six blocks and was credited with a team-leading seven digs. Freshman setter Carlos Moreno recorded 40 assists on the night.
BYU will next travel to Hawaii for the regular-season finale against the second-ranked Warriors (19-6,16-4). BYU and Hawaii will square off on both Friday and Saturday at the Special Events Center in Honolulu, beginning at 7 p.m. (HST). Both matches can be heard over the internet on Honolulu's KCCN radio. Fans may listen in by logging on to the University of Hawaii webpage at uhathletics.hawaii.edu.
The two-match series at Hawaii will determine final seedings in the MPSF Tournament for both the Cougars and Warriors. Currently the Cougars hold a match lead over Stanford, who play at USC and Pepperdine this weekend. A Stanford loss at either Pepperdine or USC and one win at Hawaii would secure at least a fourth-place finish for the Cougars. Should BYU earn the fourth-place seeding, it will host the No. 5 seed in the first round of the MPSF Tournament on Saturday, April 20 at the Smith Fieldhouse.
