LOS ANGELES -- BYU completed the sweep of USC in the second match of the series, coming away with its second 3-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win in the Lyon Center, 30-16, 30-28, 30-22. With the win, the Cougars improve to 11-3 on the season, while the Trojans fall to 3-14 (1-11 MPSF) on the year with their eighth-straight loss.
Jonathan Alleman was the shining star for the Cougars Saturday, hitting a match-high 15 kills and a blazing .684 attack percentage, his highest of the season. Jaime Mayol hit a personal-best 14 kills (.455) and added a match-high four blocks (2-2) to join the four Cougars who hit over .400 in the match.
"We played just a little bit better overall than we did last night," said BYU head coach Tom Peterson. "It was a good win for us, to come back and play better the second night. We haven't done that in awhile."
Overall, the Cougars dominated on offense with five aces (three from Carlos Moreno) and a team attack percentage of .430 that crushed the Trojans, who hit only .157 on the night.
Rafael Paal added a match-high 11 digs on defense, as the Cougars out-dug the Trojans 33 to 27 and out-blocked them 8.0 to 2.5. BYU improved its serving over last night, committing only 12 errors compared to 18 in the previous match.
"Our serving was better to begin with--much better in first game, and we maybe had five errors in second game," Peterson said. "To be where we'd like to be, though, we need to have only three to four errors per game."
In the first game the Cougars out-hit the Trojans .520 to -.033 and had five blocks to earn an easy 30-16 win. USC gained an early lead in game two, but the Cougars rallied back with five unanswered points to take the lead at 14-13. The Trojans played hard and regained the lead after a 5-0 run but they couldn't hold on to it. With the score tied at 28, Alleman scored a kill and the Trojans followed with a fatal game-ending shot out of bounds for the Cougar win.
Game three was owned by the Cougars, who earned a quick 28-22 lead while out-hitting USC .457 to .219 and finished off the last two points on an Alleman kill and a Trojan error for the win.
USC's Ian Gallagher played a nice match for the Trojans, hitting a team-high .407 percent with 14 kills, while Blake Tippet added nine kills and six digs.
BYU will host three non-conference matches next week, hosting Concordia on Wednesday and No. 11 Penn State on Friday and Saturday, all to be held in the Smith Fieldhouse.

PROVO -- After splitting a pair of matches with second-ranked Hawaii at home last week, the BYU men's volleyball team will take to the road for the third time this season, traveling to Los Angeles to play the University of Southern California in two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contests. The fourth-ranked Cougars (9-3, 9-3 MPSF) and the Trojans (3-12, 1-9 MPSF) will square off in the Lyon Center in back-to-back matches on Feb. 28 and Mar. 1.
"Any team we play in our league is good," BYU head coach Tom Peterson said. "USC is a tall team. They have some players on their roster who are 6-10, 6-9, and a few at 6-8. They are a really tall team, and we can't overlook that."
USC's top blockers have averaged more than one block per game on the season, and with their height the Cougars will have an extra challenge.
Coming off a 3-1 loss to Hawaii last week in the Marriott Center, the Cougars are looking to regain their momentum and bring home some wins. Peterson also hopes to give some of his less-visible players some time in the spotlight at USC.
"The competition is really close in practice," Peterson said. "I have a few players I'd like to get into the match and see how they play in real competition."
Since their first matchup in 1990, the Cougars command a 12-7 lead over the Trojans in the series, and are 4-3 in Los Angeles. USC is coming off a non-conference loss to Cal Baptist on Feb. 25 and is in a six-match losing streak, so will be hungry for a win at home this weekend.
Both matches will be held at 7 p.m. (PST) in the Lyon Center.
