BYU Busts Out Brooms in San Diego

SAN -- The first weekend of play for the No. 1 BYU men's volleyball team ended with a three-game sweep, 30-27, 30-22, 30-28, at UC San Diego Saturday as the team improved to 2-0 in the young season. Sophomore Andrew Stewart (Sandy, Utah) led both teams with 15 kills.

The sweep marked the 18th time in 24 matches that the Cougars have blanked the Tritons. BYU beat UCSD Friday in four games, and the two teams have never faced off in a fifth-game situation.

"We played well tonight," BYU head coach Shawn Patchell said. "It was a good win. UCSD is a good team, and we had to play well to beat them in three games. Stewart had another great night. His percentage was phenomenal, and he was the one who came through in the crunch."

Stewart recorded a hitting percentage of .591. All-American senior middle blocker Russell Holmes had 11 kills, a .688 hitting percentage, and 15 total points. Senior opposite Jonathan Charette also got into double figures with 10 kills of his own and a .400 hitting percentage.

The second game was the Cougar's best of the night. The team as a whole hit .667 and did not record an error in the game. UCSD was up 27-26 in the third, but BYU edged back into the lead and sealed the game with a kill then a block from Stewart for the final two points of the contest.

Neither Ivan Perez nor Joel Silva were in attendance at the match as both are currently playing for their respective national teams of Puerto Rico and Venezuela.

The Cougars' next match will be at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, of IPFW, next Friday at 7 p.m. CST. The team will then play at Lewis on Saturday at 7 p.m. CST before heading home to face Cal Baptist on Jan. 25 and 26 in the team's first home matches of the 2008 season.

PROVO -- The No. 1 ranked BYU men's volleyball team will see its first action of the new year Friday and Saturday at UC San Diego, a team to which the Cougars have never lost. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. PST.

BYU is a perfect 22-0 against the Tritons of UCSD. This year's squad is led by All-Americans Russell Holmes and Ivan Perez, although Perez is not likely to play this weekend for BYU as he is currently playing with his national team in Puerto Rico.

Interim head coach Shawn Patchell returns to man the team's helm in his second year. He led BYU to a 23-6 record in 2007 and a final ranking of No. 4. Former BYU setter Rob Nielson also returns for his second year as Patchell's assistant.
