DALLAS, Texas – Amid a difficult field that includes five teams in the top 25, BYU women’s golf is tied for fifth following the first round of play at the Trinity Forest Invitational. 

“I’m happy with a solid first round, particularly for Allysha Mae (Mateo) and Lila (Galeai),” BYU women’s golf coach Carrie Roberts said. “I’m especially proud of Allysha Mae for staying focused all day.”

Mateo led the Cougars in scoring, finishing the first round with two birdies in the final three holes for a 1-over-par 73. Her performance has Mateo tied for seventh individually at the par 72, Trinity Forest Golf Club.
  
Galeai, the Cougars’ lone freshman, was also impressive in her first round of collegiate golf, carding a 74, that included three consecutive birdies to begin the back-nine. Cynthia Tu (77), Naomi Soifua (78), and Kerstin Fotu (80) completed the Cougars’ first round scoring on Monday. 

The top five spots after one round of play are held by No. 1 ranked Baylor (284), No. 11 Oklahoma State (292), No. 20 Texas (298), Washington (300) and Tulsa (302), who is tied for fifth with BYU. 

Due to a frost delay altering the morning’s tee times, none of the teams were able to complete the second round before play was suspended Monday at nightfall. The remainder of the second round and entirety of the third round will be completed on Tuesday, Feb. 2 with tee times slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. CST.

DALLAS, Texas – BYU women’s golf is set to begin its spring season on February 2-3 at the Trinity Forest Invitational.  

The two-day, 54-hole tournament is hosted by SMU at the par-72 Trinity Forest Golf Club. The Cougars will face a challenging field of thirteen opponents, among them, No. 1 Baylor, No. 11 Oklahoma State, No. 14 Texas Tech, No. 20 Texas and No. 23 Kansas State.  

Teeing off for the Cougars in Dallas will be senior Naomi Soifua (Provo, Utah), junior Allysha Mae Mateo (Honolulu, Hawaii), sophomores Kerstin Fotu (Alpine, Utah) and Cynthia Tu (Vienna, Virginia) and freshman Lila Galeai (Orem, Utah).  

Monday’s action will be the first for BYU since competing in three events during the fall. The Cougars were led by Mateo who posted top 10 finishes in all three tournaments, including runner-up at the Lady Red Wolves Classic in Jonesboro, Arkansas where she finished with a three-day score of 211 at 5-under-par (68-73-70).  

This week’s tournament is one of seven events scheduled for the Cougars’ spring season and the first since a seventh-place finish at the Mercer Invitational on November 9-10.  

The team will tee-off at Trinity Oaks on Monday with a shotgun start to a 36-hole day, followed by 18 holes on Tuesday. Fans are allowed at the tournament, although they are asked to wear masks and maintain distance from coaches and players.
