LAS -- Despite strong third rounds from juniors Camille Gardner and Shayla Forsey, the BYU women’s golf team competed for a 15th-place finish at 20-over-par at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown.
Playing in a field with tough competition, including several ranked teams, the Cougars battled to the end to close out competition for the fall season.
Gardner and Forsey finished tied for the No. 51 spot at 4-over-par. Gardner completed round three at two-under-par, while Forsey finished at 1-under-par for the final round.
Gardner gradually improved the number of strokes taken in each round as she made seven birdies and just one bogey and two double-bogeys in round three. Forsey made two birdies in the final round with just one bogey.
Freshman Maggie Yuan matched her second-round score of +3 75, ending the tournament at five-over-par after making 1 birdie on the day.
Sophomore Jade Bollinger fell a few places when she scored a +6 78 in the final round, making two birdies but six bogeys.
Natalia Jimenez, a senior from Bogota, Colombia, suffered a difficult tournament, placing tied for the No. 83 spot at +15 overall. She scored an 8-over-par round three after making a birdie and five bogeys on the day.
No. 19 Pepperdine finished in first place at –41, with No. 5 Oklahoma State coming in second at –29.
The Cougars will look to improve during the off-season, as their next tournament won’t be played until Feb. 9-11, 2009, at the Northop Grumman Regional Challenge in California.
