Lott Named MVP, Joins Hartsock On All-Tournament Team

ORLANDO -- The Cougars brought home the hardware Saturday from the UCF Fall Invitational, recording their third sweep of the weekend with a 30-13, 30-20, 30-25 win over Stetson and taking home the tournament title. Junior rightside hitter Erica Lott earned tournament MVP honors, joining senior middle blocker Lindsy Hartsock on the All-Tournament team.

"This was a nice opening weekend for us," said BYU head coach Jason Watson. "It was difficult to play early in the morning and then come back and play again, but I think we learned a lot about our team. I feel really good about where we're at."

Lott led BYU against the Hatters, adding a match-high 18 kills to her morning total of 15. The junior, who made a switch from outside hitter to rightside in the offseason, hit .556 for the match and .379 for the weekend. Hartsock, the nation's second-best hitter in 2005, hit .593 for the tournament including .833 against Stetson. Junior outside hitter Chelsea Goodman added 11 kills and a match-best 15 digs for her first double-double of the season.

Several Cougars made their debuts in the season-opening tournament for BYU, including redshirt freshmen Marisa Vandersteen and Ashton Hansen. Vandersteen recorded three kills on three swings and two blocks in just one game against Stetson. Hansen recorded four kills on six attempts in two games of action. Sophomore Bryn Porter made the first start of her career and made good on the opportunity with a career-high 11 kills.

The Cougars hit .415 for the match and held the Hatters to just a 0.83 mark. BYU also once again came out on top in every statistical category on the afternoon.

The 3-0 Cougars now return to Provo for their home opener against No. 4 Stanford Friday in the Smith Fieldhouse. The Cougars host the four-team BYU Molten Classic Friday and Saturday.

BYU Radio to Broadcast All Three BYU Matches

PROVO -- The Cougars open up the 2006 volleyball season this weekend on the road at the University of Central Florida Fall Invitational. After an impressive run in 2005 that saw BYU finish 25-4 and win the Mountain West Conference regular-season title, head coach Jason Watson and a talented cast of newcomers and returning players hope to start the year off with a bang and show why they are once again the preseason favorites to repeat as league champions.

"I have enjoyed our team's effort in preparation for the season," said BYU head coach Jason Watson. "It's been a challenging but successful preseason camp. Our team is excited to be heading to UCF and looking forward to competing for the first time this season."

The two-day event, hosted by UCF on their Orlando, Fla., campus, will feature six matches beginning with BYU against Florida International on Friday at 4 p.m. (ET). The Cougars will play again on Saturday at 10 a.m. against Central Florida and then at 4 p.m. versus Stetson. BYU, listed No. 26 in the Preseason CSTV/AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, is 1-0 all-time against both FIU and UCF and has never played Stetson.

Senior middle blocker Lindsy Hartsock, who ranked second in the nation in hitting percentage last season and was the MWC Player of the Year, headlines a roster featuring six returning starters among 11 returning letterwinners. In addition to Hartsock, 2005 All-MWC honorees Chelsea Goodman and Erica Lot, both junior outside hitters, also return along with 2004 all-conference outside hitter Kim Wilson, who redshirted last season due to injury. Hartsock, Goodman and Lott have all been named preseason All-MWC picks.

Fans of the Cougars can catch all of the BYU action at this week's tournament on BYU Radio. The live audio link can be accessed by going to the schedule page of the BYU women's volleyball homepage at http://www.byucougars.com/volleyball_w/.
