Goodman, Dyer Will BYU To Win

Image

OREM -- With timely play from two of its best, the No. 19 BYU women's volleyball team posted its 10th sweep of the season Tuesday night with a 30-26, 30-28, 30-28 win at Utah Valley State College. With the victory, BYU improves to 13-2 on the year while UVSC drops to 11-7.

"Our team continues to find a way to win," said BYU head coach Jason Watson. "It's encouraging to know that we can do that. We just need to get better at the little details. We were doing that well early in the season but have lost our way a little bit. We just need to be consistent."

While the win goes in the record books as a sweep, the Wolverines gave the Cougars a battle, hanging tough in all three games. BYU needed spectacular play from both veterans and newcomers to hold off the UVSC charge and got it from several sources.

Junior outside hitter Chelsea Goodman recorded her ninth double-double of the year with a match-high 19 kills to go along with 10 digs and four blocks. She was joined in the double-digit kill column by sophomore Rachel Dyer with 14 and Kim Wilson Sorensen with 10. Junior setter Jenna Judkins, still playing for the injured Amy Schlauder, posted her third double-double in four matches with 49 assists and 10 digs. Dyer led the BYU block with six while Lindsy Hartsock added five and Goodman and junior Catherine Perker, making her first career start in place of the injured Erica Lott, each added four. Redshirt freshman Stephanie Lau also contributed for the Cougars in just her second career match with four aces.

All three games saw late ties as the two teams battled it out in front of a UVSC-season-high 1,501 fans. After the score was knotted at 20-20 in game one, the Cougars put together an 11-6 run to seal the 30-26 victory. Game two saw a point-for-point battle all the way until 28-28 before Goodman put down two kills to give BYU the 30-28 win.

The Wolverines gave the Cougars all they could handle in game three, racking up a 23-18 lead until Dyer took matters into her own hands with a block and back-to-back kills during a 5-0 BYU run to tie things up at 23-23. UVSC kept up the pressure though, clawing to a 28-27 advantage late. However, Goodman once again provided the timely offensive spark, putting down two kills to give BYU the match-point opportunity, which the Cougars converted on a Wolverine hitting error.

BYU will be back in action at home this weekend as the Cougars return to Mountain West Conference play to take on TCU on Friday night at 7 p.m. in a BYU-TV broadcast and New Mexico on Saturday night at 7 p.m.

No. 19 BYU Heads Down the Road

Image

PROVO -- The No. 19 BYU women's volleyball team is set for another busy week as the Cougars (12-2, 4-1 MWC) prepare to take on UVSC Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Orem, Utah, before returning home for two weekend matches against Mountain West Conference foes.

"UVSC is a quality opponent, one that's extremely competitive at home," said BYU head coach Jason Watson. "As our program continues to progress, we'll need to be prepared for this challenge. It'll be a great opportunity for us to compete against a well-coached team."

BYU has swept nine of the 14 matches it has played this season. Of the seven overall statistical categories tracked by the league, BYU players lead the conference in three of them (hitting percentage -- Rachel Dyer; kills -- Erica Lott; points -- Erica Lott) and are second in two others (blocks -- Lindsy Hartsock; aces -- Chelsea Goodman). Cougar Jenna Judkins is ranked third in assists and Goodman and Janvier Beaumont are also ranked ninth and tenth, respectively, in digs. The Cougars also boast three of the league's top five players in hitting percentage with Dyer (1st - .410), Hartsock (2nd - .404) and Lott (5th - .336).

Injuries are still plaguing BYU as the Cougars are without the services of top hitter Erica Lott due to back problems, and starting setter Amy Schlauder is still out with a broken finger. Lott is listed day-to-day, while Schlauder will be evaluated by team doctors this week to determine when she can return. Back-up setter Jenna Judkins played Friday night on a sprained ankle but is expected to start against UVSC.

The Wolverines are 11-6 so far this season, including a split of two matches with Weber State, their only opponent in common with the Cougars. They have also won their last four straight contests. Sophomore Camie Manwill leads the Wolverines on both sides of the ball with 4.25 kills per game and 4.40 digs per game. She is helped on the offensive side by junior Jessica Endres with 3.44 kpg, the only Wolverine averaging more than 2.0 kpg. Endres also leads the team with a .330 hitting percentage while adding 0.74 blocks per game, second on the squad. Senior Brooke Adams leads the Wolverine block with 0.91 per game.

As a team, UVSC is hitting .212 while allowing opponents to hit .184. The Wolverines area also allowing 2.11 blocks per game compared to their own 1.98 mark.
