BYU men’s golf to host biennial Cougar Day

PROVO, Utah -- The defending West Coast Conference Champion BYU men's golf team will take a break from its fall season to host Cougar Day Monday, Oct. 16 at Riverside Country Club.

 

Fans are welcome to attend and participate in a free clinic given by BYU golf alumni and PGA Tour Pros. Johnny Miller, Mike Reid, Dean Wilson, Daniel Summerhays and Zac Blair will be in attendance, along with over 30 other former BYU players. Current BYU coaches and players will also participate. 

 

The free clinic will be held at 9 a.m. MDT at Riverside Country Club.

Huang finishes top 25 at NCAA Championship

STILLWATER, Okla. – Rose Huang finished top 25 at the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships on Monday.

"Rose Huang was very solid all week," BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. "She had a great comeback on her back nine today.  She held her own against the best this week."

During the final round Monday, Huang recorded a 73 (+1) to finish tied for 21st overall. Firing a 72-hole total of 292, she carded 14 birdies over four rounds, including four on the final day. She concluded the NCAA Championships tied with five other players including Robyn Choi (Colorado), Albane Valenzuela (Stanford), Alice Chen (Furman), Dylan Kim (Arkansas) and Sophia Schubert (Texas). 

Heading into today's final round of individual players at the NCAA Championships, Huang was tied for 17th place with a 54-hole total of (+3) 219. The junior, who played her Sunday third round score on Thursday, shot 70-75-74 in the first three rounds.

She was one of nine individuals, who was not on the top 15 teams, who advanced to Monday play. Going into the fourth round, Cheyenne Knight (Alabama) Jennifer Kupcho (Wake Forest) and Bianca Pagdanganan (Arizona) were all tied for first place at 209 (-7).

Kupcho finished in first place 280 (-8) while Pagdanganan and Andrea Lee (Stanford) tied for second place with a total score of 282 (-6).

Last year, Alex White finished 14th individually in the NCAA Championship.

Huang to compete at NCAA National Championships

PROVO, Utah – Rose Huang will represent No. 42 BYU at the women’s golf 2018 NCAA National Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma May 18-23.

At the NCAA Austin Regional, Huang fired a 212 (-4) in three rounds tying for fourth place. She then played a five-hole playoff to advance as an individual at the NCAA Championship.

The junior from Honolulu, Hawai’i competed in 12 events throughout the 2017-2018 season, finished top-20 10 times and maintained a 73.28 stroke average. She finished in first place at the West Coast Conference Championships, in April.

The NCAA Championships include 12 individuals and 24 teams. To exclude Sunday play, Huang will complete her shotgun practice round on Wednesday, May 15 while the other 11 individuals will practice on Thursday. Huang, will then play her third round on Thursday, May 16 to count as her third round Sunday score. All 12 individuals and 24 teams will play their first round on Friday, May 18.

For the first round, Huang will will tee off at 1:05 p.m. CDT on the first tee. Links to live scoring can be found on the women’s schedule page.

Huang advances after five-hole playoff, No. 41 BYU women take ninth at NCAA Regional

AUSTIN, Texas – Rose Huang advanced to the NCAA Championships after a five-hole playoff, while the No. 41 BYU women’s team finished ninth at the NCAA Austin Regional on Wednesday at the University of Texas Golf Course.

"We are disappointed we didn’t get to the NCAA Championships as a team," BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. "But, we are super proud of Rose Huang, who qualified as an individual."

In the NCAA Austin Regional, the top six team advanced to the NCAA Division I Championship as well as the top three individuals, who are not part of the top six teams.

Maddie Szeryk from Texas A&M claimed the first individual place with a total score of 209 (-7). Tied for fourth place, BYU’s Rose Huang faced off against Michigan State's’ Sarah Burnham and Houston’s Leonie Harm for the second and third individual spots.

Through the first four playoff holes, the three players were still tied. On the par-5 fifth hole, Huang shot a birdie securing the second individual spot at the NCAA Championship. Harm earned the final individual spot on the seventh playoff hole.

In the third day of the NCAA Austin Regional, Huang’s 71 (-1) put her in a tie for fourth place as she recorded a season-best score of 212 carding a 71-70-71 throughout the competition.

Also finishing in the top 20, Kendra Dalton tied for 16th place at the NCAA Austin Regional. Dalton, who fired a pair of 71’s in the first two rounds, shot 73 (+1) on the final day. Finishing with a 54-hole score of 215, the senior birdied eight holes throughout the regional.

On the final day of the regional championships, the Cougars carded a team total of 296 (+10) claiming the ninth spot with a three-day 54-hole total of 885 (+21). The Cougars were only three strokes behind No. 11 Michigan State who placed eighth and seven strokes behind the seventh place team, No. 38 Texas A&M.

No. 3 Arkansas won the regional shooting 5-under par on the final day to finish at 26-under. The Razorbacks, along with No. 8 Texas, No. 19 Auburn, No. 14 Florida, No. 35 Baylor and No. 21 Oklahoma advance to the 2018 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Naomi Soifua carded 74-78-75 in the three-day competition. Totaling a 227 through 54 holes, Soifua tied for 56th place.  

Annie Yang and Anna Kennedy both tied for 72nd with a total score of 233 (+3). Yang shot 75-77-81 while Kennedy carded 76-78-79 through three days. Both birdied a par-5 hole on the final day of the NCAA Austin Regional.

Huang will represent No. 41 BYU women’s golf and compete as an individual at the NCAA Division I Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma May 18-23.

Three of the five student-athletes who competed in this year's regional championships will return next season. The two seniors on the team are Kendra Dalton and Annie Yang.

WCC champion Cougars to participate in Austin NCAA Regional

PROVO, Utah — Three-time West Coast Conference champion BYU women’s golf will compete in postseason play at the 2018 Austin Division I NCAA Regional held at the University of Texas Golf Club on May 7-9. The No. 41 Cougars will be an 11 seed.

Seventy-two teams and 24 individuals were selected to compete at one of four regional championships, each featuring 18 teams and six individuals. 

“We are excited that we will be heading to the Austin Regional,” BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. “I see a lot of beatable teams and we are looking forward to competing.”

BYU recorded two first-place team victories during the 2017-18 campaign, including a playoff win against Pepperdine at the 2018 WCC Championships.  

The Cougars captured all three of the major postseason individual honors for the 2017-18 season for the first time under Robert’s helm. Senior Kendra Dalton was named the WCC Player of the Year for the second-straight season, while Coach Roberts received the WCC Coach of the Year nod for the third year in a row. Naomi Soifua was named the 2017-18 WCC Freshman of the Year.

The four regional sites include TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas, the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisconsin and the Don Veller Seminole Golf Course and Club in Tallahassee, Florida. The top six teams and three individuals from each regional will advance to the 2018 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf National Championships played May 18-23 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
