Rasmussen in first, Cougars move to 10th
STANFORD, Calif. — Freshman Rhett Rasmussen fired a tournament-best 64 in the second round of The Goodwin as BYU men's golf moved to 10th place on Friday.
"It was not a very good day for the team," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "We didn't handle the conditions well, and we started poorly and couldn't get anything going. The course is difficult, but we made it much more difficult that it needs to be. However, Rhett (Rasmussen) had one of the best rounds I have seen since Daniel Summerhays' 62 at the NCAA Championships in Virginia."
The Cougars dropped to 10th place from fifth place after round one of the tournament. BYU shot 301 as a team in Friday's round.
Rasmussen led BYU, firing a tournament-best 64 (-6). The freshman shot 2-under on the front nine and shot 4-under on the back, birdying seven holes on Friday.
"(Rasmussen's) 64 is the low round for the tournament," Brockbank said, "And to shoot that this morning was even more impressive. It will be exciting to watch him try to win his first collegiate event in a very strong field of players tomorrow."
Patrick Fishburn, who shot 1-over on Thursday, carded a 75 in round two. The junior is tied for 30th place individually after 36 holes. Peter Kuest moved to 74th place. Kuest shot 11-over (81) on the day. Zach Pritchard also fired an 81 on Friday. Pritchard is now tied for 107th place.
After Friday's round, CJ Lee sits at 18-over par for the event. Lee shot 13-over in the second round.
BYU men's golf will compete in the third and final round of The Goodwin on Saturday. The Cougars will begin play at 1:21 p.m. PDT.
