Cole Ponich to play in Utah Championship

PROVO, Utah – BYU golfer Cole Ponich qualified earlier this week for the Utah Championship and will tee it up Thursday at the Oakridge Country Club.

Ponich will be playing in a group with another amateur, Preston Summerhays, along with former Cougar great Daniel Summerhays. The field is mostly professionals in the Korn Ferry Tour event at Ponich's home course beginning Thursday and scheduled to conclude Sunday.

The Farmington, Utah, product took one of the eight qualifying spots with a 9-under 63 on Monday at the qualifying event at TalonsCove Golf Club, finishing tied for second place.

Ponich competed in seven events with BYU in an abbreviated freshman campaign during the 2019-20 season.

In addition to Ponich, former Cougars Patrick Fishburn and Mike Weir join Summerhays and will also compete in the Utah Championship.

The Utah Championship will be televised on the Golf Channel Thursday to Sunday from 4-6 p.m. MT each day.

Peter Kuest will also make his professional debut at the Travelers Championship, a PGA Tour event June 25-28.

Kuest finished his award-winning Cougar career as a PING First-Team All-American in 2019-20 and won 10 tournaments during his collegiate career.

Alongside Kuest, Zac Blair will also play in the Travelers Championship. Blair, another former All-American at BYU, has been playing professionally since 2013.

Fans can watch the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands on the Golf Channel and CBS.
