BYU competes on day one at La Purisima

LOMPOC, Calif. – Junior golfer Carson Lundell and freshman Max Brenchley tied for 11th on day one of the La Purisima College Invite to lead the BYU men's golf team.

The team combined for rounds of 305 (+17) in the first and improved to a 296 (+8) in the second round to finish the first day at 601 (+25) behind San Diego 565 (-11), Saint Mary's 577 (+1) and Loyola Marymount 583 (+7). 

"We need to improve in every aspect of the game," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "The bright spot was two solid rounds from Max Brenchley for his first college tournament."

Lundell had rounds of 76 (+4) and 71 (-1) while Brenchley carded a 74 (+2) and 73 (+1) in his first official action as a Cougar. 

David Timmins shot a pair of 75s (+3) in each round and is tied for 17th while Spencer Dunaway, tied for 28th, had an 83 (+11) and 77 (+5). Brock Stanger posted an 80 (+8) and 81 (+9) to finish the day in 30th. 

Three Cougars competed as individuals with newcomer Keanu Akina posting a 78 (+6) and 77 (+5) to tie for 25th, Elijah Turner shot an 82 (+10) and 76 (+4) in 27th and Austin Banz had two 80s (+8) on the day, tying for 28th through 36 holes.
