BYU Finishes Third at the WCC Championships
HOLLISTER, Calif. – In its inaugural season in the West Coast Conference the BYU men’s golf team finished third at the WCC Championships on Wednesday.
“We didn’t have our best stuff today,” said BYU coach Bruce Brockbank. “We made enough birdies and hit some great shots, but we still made too many bogeys.”
BYU finished the 54-hole tournament with a 2-over-par 866 total, 22 shots behind champion Saint Mary’s. San Francisco placed second, nine shots off the pace at 853.
Junior Zac Blair (5-under 211) led the way for the Cougars, finishing tied for fourth. Blair, who birdied the first hole in all three rounds, shot an even 72 on the final day of competition. His fourth-place finish marks four consecutive top-20 finishes with one regular season tournament still remaining.
“I just need to keep playing solid,” Blair said. “Shoot par and the rest will take care of itself.”
Sophomore Jordan Hammer (2-over 218) followed Blair for BYU, shooting a final round 72 to claim 15th place. Hammer jumped out of the gate with birdies on the first two holes, but slipped slighty on the back nine with bogeys on the last two holes.
“Jordan played really well today,” Brockbank said. “He’s learning and next time he’ll have a chance to seal it.”
Other Cougars who participated included Cole Ogden (3-over 219), Devon Purser (5-over 221) and Justin Keiley (6-over 222).
The Cougars return home for the PING Cougar Classic on April 27-28 at the Riverside Country Club in Provo.
