Cougars fall to No. 45 New Mexico

PROVO, Utah – BYU men’s tennis dropped its home match Saturday to No. 45 New Mexico 4-0 in Provo.

The Lobos (11-6) got out to a quick 1-0 lead on the Cougars (8-9, 2-0) after seizing the doubles point. Cougars David Ball and Jacob Sullivan fell at No. 2 doubles 6-0 to Augustus Ge and James Hignett. New Mexico clinched the point on No. 3 doubles as Samir Iftikhar and Mitchell McDaniels outplayed the BYU duo of Jeremy Bourgeois and Aidan Carrazedo 6-2. Francis Sargeant and Andrey Goryachkov were tied at four in their match when it was called.

The Lobos did not slow down when singles play started. They won the first three matchups to take the overall match. Hignett was first off the court after beating Ball 6-0, 6-1 and Hayden Sabatka was victorious in his matchup with Shane Monroe 6-4, 6-4. In the clinching match, Bart Van Leijsen took the second set tiebreaker against Jeremy Bourgeois to win 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) and to end the match.
