Cougars fall in BNP Paribas Collegiate Challenge

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – BYU men’s tennis fell to No. 3 Baylor Friday 4-0 at the BNP Paribas Collegiate Challenge at the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens.

"The guys did a great job today against a very good team today," BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. "I was proud of their preparation and competitive spirit against such a good team. We will be better from this experience."

The Cougars (8-10) fell behind 1-0 early after the Bears (13-2) captured the doubles point. David Ball and Jeremy Bourgeois lost 6-0 to Vince Schneider and Felipe Rios. Baylor’s No. 77 ranked doubles duo of Julian Lenz and Diego Galeano clinched the point for the Bears with a 6-4 win over Francis Sargeant and Shane Monroe.

Baylor did not let up in singles, winning the first three matches in straight sets to finish off BYU. No. 36 ranked Max Tchoutakian was off the court first against Monroe, winning 6-1, 6-2. Schneider followed quickly with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Jacob Sullivan at No. 4 singles. With the Bears up 3-0, Rios beat Aidan Carrazedo at No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-1 to finish the match.

Andrey Goryachkov was the only Cougar to win a set on the day. He took the first set against Galeano but play was suspended during the second set when the match was won. Sargeant dropped his first set to No. 4 Lenz but was tied 4-4 in the second when play was suspended.

BYU will face No. 20 Tulsa Saturday at 5 p.m. PDT on the consolation side of the bracket. Tulsa fell to No. 4 USC Friday 4-0.
