Cougars fall at home to Pacific

PROVO, Utah – BYU men’s tennis dropped a home match to Pacific 4-3 in a back-and-forth match Friday in Provo.

The Tigers (7-14, 4-2) came out fast and captured the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Pacific’s Miguel Diaz and Jose Chamba beat Andrey Goryachkov and Jacob Sullivan 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.  The Cougars (9-14, 3-3) bounced back to even the score in doubles when David Ball and Aidan Carrazedo won at No. 3 doubles 6-3, but the Tigers clinched the point at No. 2 where Marlon Brand and Daniel Alameh outplayed Francis Sargeant and Shane Monroe on their way to a 6-3 win.

Ball was first off the court in singles with a dominating 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles to get BYU on the board. Pacific pushed the score to 2-1 when Chamba beat Carrazedo 6-0, 6-3.

Juan Canales battled to a 6-4, 7-5 win to tie the match at two. Jeremy Bourgeois fell at No. 4 singles 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), but Monroe won in a second set tiebreaker, beating Alex Hamilton 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), to tie the match for the third time. The Tigers clinched the match at No. 1 singles where Diaz won 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 over Sargeant.

BYU hits the road next weekend for two crucial West Coast Conference matches at Gonzaga and Portland before returning for senior day against San Diego on April 18.
