Freshman pulls big upset in L.A.

LOS -- Freshman Patrick Kawka beat No. 2 seeded Daniel Kosakowski of UCLA in the singles Round of 32 at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships Thursday.

Kawka defeated Kosakowski 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Kosakowski, also a freshman, was ranked No. 5 nationally and No. 2 in California as a junior player and was one of the top recruits going into the 2010 season.

“Overall, it was a good day,” said Zack Warren, assistant head coach who accompanied the team to the tournament while head coach Brad Pearce was in New York. “Patrick had a great win. It shows we can beat the best players in the country. It was very promising.”

Friday, Kawka and Evan Urbina will play their first doubles match of the tournament at 2 p.m.

In the second round of singles, Kawka fell 6-2, 6-1 to Alex Konigsfeldt of UC Santa Barbara.

No. 5 seed Urbina lost to his San Diego opponent in singles, Clarke Spinosa, in the Round of 32 (6-7, 6-3, 6-4).

Roman Warias and Tyler Loong also lost their doubles qualifying round match to Jan Guler and Ryan McNamara of Concordia 8-3.
