First Day Success for Men's Tennis at Regionals
LAS VEGAS – The BYU men’s tennis team advanced seven players in the main singles bracket and recorded nine wins for an impressive start in the first day of ITA Mountain Region Championships in Las Vegas.
The tournament began Wednesday and runs through Sunday at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas.
Senior Georgy Batrakov (1) continued moving past opponents in fall play by defeating Austin Miller of Idaho State in the Round of 128. Batrakov only dropped two games against Miller, advancing with a 6-2, 6-0 win.
Junior Spencer Smith (6) advanced to the next round after defeating Ben Tasevac of Utah, 6-3, 6-2.
Sophomore Patrick Kawka (10) will see second round action thanks to a 7-6, 6-3 victory over New Mexico State’s Paul Denele.
Freshman Keaton Cullimore (25) defeated Denver’s Luke Manley, 6-3, 6-2, to secure a spot in the round of 64.
Freshman Francis Sargeant made quick work of his opponent, moving on to the next round after defeating Peter Ramstromer-Pello of Weber State, 6-3, 6-0.
Senior Michael Eraso topped Aidan Reid of Boise State, 6-4, 7-6, in the first round after winning a second set tiebreaker.
Freshman David Doehring overcame Air Force’s Joey Brandt, 6-3, 6-2, to advance.
Freshman Dean Ormsby fell to Ace Matias of instate rival Utah, 6-1, 6-1. Ormsby advanced to the second round in the singles consolation bracket after a perfect 6-0, 6-0 sweet of Montana State’s Alberto Fuentes.
Sophomore Travis Fillmore lost to Andy Battles (12), 6-1, 6-3, in his first round matchup. Fillmore will continue tournament play in the second round of the singles consolation bracket after defeating Germain Degardin of New Mexico State.
Doubles play will kick off for the Cougars Thursday as well as the singles Round of 64.
The singles champion and doubles champion will represent the entire Mountain Region in the ITA National Championships in New York at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, cite of the U.S. Open.
