No. 2 BYU on the road at Grand Canyon
PROVO, Utah – The No. 2 BYU men’s volleyball team will face Grand Canyon in its first away match of MPSF play at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14, at the GCU Arena.
The match will be streamed on GCUTV and live stats will be available on the BYU men’s volleyball schedule page.
Both teams enter the match 2-0 in conference play and tied for first in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation standings. The undefeated Cougars (12-0) swept No. 7 UCLA and defeated No. 8 Pepperdine in four sets last week while the Lopes (9-2) have beaten No. 9 Stanford and USC.
Currently on a 12-match win streak since the start of the season, BYU has matched its second-best start in program history. The 12-straight wins are tied for the fifth-longest Cougar win streak in the rally era.
Grand Canyon is off to one of its best starts in recent years and has won its last eight matches. The Lopes finished tied for sixth in the MPSF after going 13-16 overall and 3-9 in MPSF play. While BYU controls the series 4-1, Grand Canyon picked up its first victory over the Cougars in program history by winning a five-set battle toward the end of last season.
BYU has been efficient offensively with an average hitting percentage of .344, ranking second in the NCAA DI-II. The Cougars also are third in average blocks per set (2.716) and fourth in average assists per set (12.18). All three averages lead the MPSF in each respective category.
Opposite hitter Gabi Garcia Fernandez continues to lead the nation from the service line with an average of .886 aces per set. The junior remains one of the top scorers as he averages 5.47 points per set to rank third in the country and first in the conference. Garcia Fernandez also paces the MPSF with his 4.09 kills per set.
Setter Wil Stanley is averaging 10.68 assists per set to remain No. 2 in the NCAA and this week's MPSF Defensive Player of the Week, Felipe de Brito Ferreira, is fifth in blocks per set with an average of 1.289.
