PROVO -- After No. 4 BYU upset No. 1 Pepperdine on Friday, the two teams took the court again Saturday but the Cougars were not as successful against the Waves this time as they were defeated 3-0 (30-26, 30-22, 30-23).

"We started well but Pepperdine made some nice plays to get us out of our rhythm," said BYU head coach Shawn Patchell. "We started to feel pressure and pushed the panic button for some reason. Pepperdine is No. 1 for a reason."

BYU was led by Kent Tuttle with 12 kills, followed closely by Andrew Stewart's ten kills and Russell Lavaja adding nine. Yamil Perez assisted on 23 points while Reed Chilton had 22 assists of his own.

BYU started the match much the way it ended Friday's with a kill by Robb Stowell. The Waves showed that they were hungry for victory, soon making the set a back-and-forth battle. With the score tied 10-10, a Pepperdine serve hit the net causing confusion on the Cougar side. The ace gave Pepperdine its first lead of the night, 11-10. However, a service error on the following play tied the match once again.

The two teams continued to exchange points but with the score tied, 15-15, Pepperdine went on a 3-0 run, thanks mostly to strong blocking on the part of the Waves’ frontline, to take a 18-15 lead. The Pepperdine run was ended by another Stowell kill. Still, from that point on the set seemed to be a game of cat and mouse with BYU struggling to catch the Waves, not leading again and only tying the set once more, 24-24. Pepperdine went on to win the set 30-26.

The Waves took an early 4-2 lead in the second set but Stowell responded with a few kills and a solo block of his own to bring the Cougars within one, 7-6. Pepperdine began to pull away taking an 11-7 lead over BYU but strong net play and kills by Stowell and Lavaja once again placed the Cougars just one point behind the Waves at 11-10. Despite having BYU on its heels, Pepperdine never let up eventually running away with the set, 30-22.

"Sometimes we lack the killer instinct necessary to play a really good team twice," said Patchell. "We weren't patient and went away from what we do well."

It became clear early in the third set that the Waves wanted to put the Cougars away quickly taking a 6-1 lead to start the set and forcing the BYU coaching staff to take an early timeout. The timeout proved effective for the Cougars as they scored immediately off a Futi Tavana and Stewart block.

Still, Pepperdine continued to give BYU its best efforts and stretched its lead to 14-8 forcing Patchell to use his second timeout of the set. Once again the timeout seemed to spark the Cougars' play and kills by Tuttle, Lavaja, Tavana and Jeff Robinson brought BYU within four. Still, the Waves could not be stopped as they went on to defeat the Cougars, 30-23, despite BYU’s continued efforts throughout the set.

The Cougars will travel to Long Beach, Calif. next weekend to take on Penn State on Friday at 5 p.m. PT and St. Francis (PA) at 5 p.m. PT on Saturday.
