WAHIAWA, Hawaii – Sophomore Lea Garner finished day one at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational tied for first place and led the BYU women's golf team to a fifth-place standing on Tuesday.

"There were a lot of positives, but we need to make better decisions and cut down on double bogeys and triple bogeys," BYU women's golf coach Carrie Roberts said. "Everybody's doing a lot of good things, but if everybody can make a few more good decisions, we'd be in second place."

BYU finished the first day with a total score of 312 at 24-over-par with a total of five birdies for the round.

Garner completed round one hitting one-over-par with a total score of 73 and finished with two birdies. Garner tied with Sacramento State's Tiffany Nichols and Northern Arizona's Kaitlen Parsons.

"Lea was consistent again like always," Roberts said. "She played solid throughout the tournament."

Senior Selu Fotu tied for ninth with a total score of 75 at three-over-par and birdied the third hole in day one of the eight-team tournament.

"Selu finished well," Roberts said. "She started at two or three-over-par and finished three-over-par, so she played well today."

Carly Oldroyd hit an 81 to finish nine-over-par, tied in 36th place, while Annie Yang tied in 42nd place at 11-over-par. Annika Afoa Kahaiali'i completed the first round at 12-over-par in 48th place.
