Garner and Cougars finish in second at Matador Invitational

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - Lea Garner and the BYU women's golf team both finished in second place at the Matador Invitational on Tuesday. 

The Cougars finished at 59-over-par, trailing first place CSU Northridge by 36 strokes and five strokes ahead of third place Cal Poly. 

"It was really windy today, but I thought the girls battled and we had a great finish," BYU women's golf coach Carrie Roberts said. "I'm encouraged with how we performed this week."

Garner's second place finish at four-over-par included three third-round birdies and was four strokes behind first place. Her 72 score in the second round was a team best for the tournament.

"Lea has a great mindset right now and has a lot of confidence," Roberts said. "She's been playing great and she knows she has a chance to win every week."

Freshman Alexandra White tied for 12th place to finish 14-over-par, while Annie Yang finished in 21st place at 18-over-par with four birdies on Tuesday. Selu Fotu finished in 28th at 23-over-par with an eagle on the 18th hole and Maria Yacaman tied in 37th at 29-over-par. 

Individual players Carly Oldroyd finished tied in 40th at 33-over-par, while Brooklyn Anderson tied for 46th at 39-over-par with two birdies for the tournament. 

BYU will travel to the Bandit Golf Course in Texas for the Jim West Challenge on Feb. 17-18. Live stats can be followed at birdiefire.com
