2013-14 Women's Golf Season Review

PROVO, Utah - The BYU women’s golf team finished the 2013-14 season in third place of the West Coast Conference with a young team looking to return stronger next season.

The Cougars finished in the top three in four of the 11 tournaments they competed in and finished in the top five in six of those. The best finish came in the Matador Invitational and the Entrada Classic where BYU finished in second place.

“We have had several top three finishes this semester which was an improvement from the fall,” BYU women’s golf coach Carrie Roberts said. “We had lower team scores and solid individual finishes as well.”

Sophomore Lea Garner led the way throughout the year with her first college-win at Hobble Creek where she finished 1-over-par. She finished as the team’s best in six tournaments throughout the year and also finished in the top 10 in six.

Freshman Alexandra White made her college debut in the Matador Invitational and tied in 12th place. She led the Cougars during the spring season along with Garner who both finished as the top two players on the team in each tournament. White completed four of the seven Spring tournaments as the top Cougar including a second-place finish at the WCC Championships.

White and Garner were also named to the 2014 All-WCC Women’s Golf Team.

White represented BYU in the 2014 NCAA West Regionals as an individual player to tie in 44th place and second among individual participants.

“Overall, I’d like to see scoring averages come down through short game and distance control,” Roberts said. “We look to be a better team and look forward to having some good finishes next year.”

Selu Fotu finished her senior campaign strong with her best finish coming at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational where she tied for fourth at 8-over-par. Fotu also recorded a career-low in a round at 71 in the second round of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational.

Senior Annika Afoa Kahaiali’i competed in all four tournaments during the Fall season with her best tournament coming at Hobble Creek where she tied for 13th place. She also hit a career-low 72 in the second round of the Cougar Cup in Pullman, Wash., and improved her stroke average each year finishing at 77.75 this season.

Freshman Annie Yang completed her freshman season by competing in 10 of the 11 tournaments. Her best finish came at the Jim West Challenge where she finished in 19th place at 18-over-par, and shot a career-low 73 in the third round of the Mountain View Invitational.

Junior Maria Yacaman was named to the 2013-14 WCC All-Academic Team. Yacaman carded a 21-over 237 at the WCC Championships, her best score of the season, to finish in 20th place.

After finishing third in the WCC the last two years, the Cougars will welcome Sierra Harr of Twin Falls, Idaho, and will look to contend for a league title with a strong group of returning players.
