LAS CRUCES, New Mexico – Junior Lea Garner finished in third place to lead BYU women’s golf to a tie for third place after day one of the NM State Aggie Invitational.

“We started out slow but picked it up and finished strong,” BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. “Tomorrow we need to create a better mindset to start and create momentum early.”

BYU shot three-over-par in a three-way-tie for third place with New Mexico State and Grand Canyon. Idaho is in first place at the end of the first day, shooting four-under-par.

Garner shot 69 in the first round, her lowest round of the season, to finish in third place. She is two strokes behind Kaitlyn Oster from Idaho (-5) and three strokes behind Charlotte Jaengkit from Grand Canyon (-6).

“I was able to stay focused the whole round and able to move on if I made a mistake,” Garner said. “The rest of the team also played well, we just have to keep it going and be tough for the next two days.”

Junior Carly Oldroyd joined Garner in the top 20 in a tie for 13th place. Oldroyd shot one-over-par in the first round. Senior Maria Yacaman shot two-over-par and tied for 29th place.

Freshman Kendra Dalton finished in a tie for 40th place, shooting three-over-par. The other freshman, Sierra Harr, shot four-over-par and finished the first day in a tie for 46th place.

Sophomore Brooklyn Anderson Hocker is competing individually in this tournament. She finished the first round in a tie for 46th place, shooting four-over-par.

The Cougars will return to action at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Live stats will be available on the BYU schedule page.
