Summerhays Leads Cougars to Win in Rain-Shortened Lady Aztec
LAKESIDE, Calif - The BYU women's golf team tied the University of Michigan for their first tournament victory of the 2000-2001 season at the Lady Aztec Spring Invitational on Tuesday.
The second round of the tournament was cancelled due to rain. As a result, the first round results will stand as the final results for the tournament, giving BYU and Michigan each a share of the title. BYU out-played a top twenty opponent for the first time this season as no. 17 Kent State finished six strokes behind the Cougars.
Carrie Summerhays, a junior All-American, led the field with a 71, setting a new course record for a female at the Barona Creek golf course. The first place finish is Summerhays' first of this season and the fifth of her collegiate career. With two more career victories, Summerhays will surpass Pam Miller as BYU's all-time winningest women's golfer.
The Cougars also had strong outings from Lisa Dernick and Adrianne Gibby who both finished in the top 20.
The rainy weather conditions plagued the tournament from beginning to end, canceling practice rounds, dampening first round play, and eventually cutting tournament play short.
The Cougars will have time to prepare for their next California adventure, the Spartan Invitational in Monterrey, Calif. on Mar. 5-6.
