Cougars finished sixth at Shanico Invitational
Corvallis, Ore.--Carrie Summerhays shot a career low 68 to help BYU's women's golf team to a sixth-place finish at the Oregon State Shanico Invitational on Saturday.
The Cougars, who were in eighth place going into the final day, picked up their game on the final day, but it was just to much ground to make up.
"We made a comeback the last two rounds after putting ourselves in a hole the first round," BYU assistant coach Sue Nyhus said. "Carrie (Summerhays) definitely is a leader out there and did a good job of helping us come back."
Summerhays earned a sixth-place finish thanks to her second round 68 as she ended six-over-par for the tournament. Her 68 was the low round of the tournament. Lisa Dernick also played solid in her first tournament for the Cougars as she shot 75-76-75 and finished 10th.
"I'm extremely pleased with how Lisa (Dernick) played," Nyhus said. "She is a very steady player and doesn't make a lot of mistakes."
Stephanie Linnell of Colorado State captured medalist honors with a 219 total. While California beat out San Diego State for the team title. The Cougars will travel to Albuquerque, N.M. next weekend to play in the Dick McGuire Invitational.
