Cougars in 10th After First Day of Competition

LAS VEGAS –The BYU women’s golf team started off slow in round one of the UNLV Rebel Invitational, before battling back during round two to finish 10th on Monday.

“We were a little timid today,” coach Carrie Roberts said. “We weren’t as confident as we should’ve been and not as well prepared as we could be.”

While the Cougars were a little rusty coming off the winter break, there were some excellent shots made during the first round.

Both Maria Yacaman and Selu Fotu shot eagles on hole No. 3.

“Hitting a couple of eagles is always exciting,” Roberts said.

While timid play was a part of round one, several Cougars improved during round two. No improvement was more impressive than that of captain Maggie Yuan.

Yuan struggled in round one, shooting a 6-over 78 to start the day. However, she bore down and attacked the course during round two, shooting par and moving into the top 20, only five strokes behind the leader.

“Maggie started a little rusty on the tee, but got focused and into a nice groove,” Roberts said.

The Cougars will finish their first spring tournament tomorrow.
