Yuan Grabs Early Lead
HOLLISTER, Calif., –In her first and only season in the West Coast Conference senior Maggie Yuan dominated the field during the first round of the WCC tournament, shooting a 2-over 74.
“It was awesome to see how well Maggie played today," BYU coach Carrie Roberts said. "She was doing everything well."
Yuan struggled out of the gate, bogeying her first hole, but finished strong. After shooting 3-over in her first nine, Yuan birdied two holes of her final eight holes to grab the early lead.
Junior Amanda Keith followed Yuan, shooting an 8-over 80 and finishing 18th after day one. Like Yuan, Keith bogeyed her first hole, but shot back-to-back biridies on 17 and 18, her best holes of the day. Keith is only three strokes back from cracking into the top 10.
As a team BYU shot a 31-over 319 putting them in last place. However, the Cougars only sit 15 strokes back of first and have an opportunity to make up ground.
"The girls just need to step up," Roberts said. "We need to hit better and have more confidence."
Second round action continues on Tuesday with the tournament concluding on Wednesday.
