• Played for the Spartanburg American Legion team in 2004 and was voted most improved in 2004 and received the team's pitching award in 2005 and 2006
• That legion team finished third in the Southeast Regionals and won the state tournament in 2004 when he was named the player of the game
• Had a 9-1 record with a 2.7 ERA in 2004 and a career Legion record of 21-3
• Started master's of accounting program
• Served a volunteer two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mendoza, Argentina
• Married Brittnye Holden in June 2011

Before BYU

• Was named First-Team all-state in 2006 by two organizations at Paul M. Dorman High
• Team won the AAAA Upper State Championship in 2006
• Played in the North/South All-Star games
• Was all-region and all-area
• Was two-time all-area academic
• Team won region in 2004 and 2006
• Was a four-year letterman and won the 2006 team pitching award
• Was a National Merit Scholar, a Robert C. Byrd Scholar, won the Wendy's High School Heisman Award and graduated third in a class of 600
• Coached by Ben Waddle
• Had a 10-1 record, 0.79 ERA, three saves in 2006
• Threw no-hitter vs. defending Upper State Champions
