1988 BYU Hall of Fame
For over 20 years BYU has had a succession of baseball players from Hawaii, but few have surpassed catcher Mike Moss.
The 5-foot-11 Moss from Honolulu was born lucky on New Year's Day in 1954, continued that luck for the Cougars from 1973-76, and was selected as an All-American by the college baseball coaches as a junior.
That year he batted .390 (.600 in league play) and made a clean sweep of awards. He was All-District Seven, All-Western Athletic Conference and Academic All-WAC.
The three-time All-WAC performer was chosen to play for the U.S. Baseball Federation Team, which played in the Pan American Games. The four-year starter was a two-time Academic All-WAC choice and was selected by the Downtown Coaches as the Outstanding Baseball Player of 1975.
Another illustration of Mike's ability is his four years of fielding at .978.
Before coming to BYU, Mike was voted Most Inspirational Player at Punahou High School, where he caught a perfect game in the 1972 Hawaii State Championships.
Moss had a calm, soothing effect on the Cougars as he led them to WAC Northern Division titles every year he played. The senior co-captain's final season was not as spectacular as the previous year because of an arm injury.
"Mike had the best technique of any catcher I've coached," said Glen Tuckett, his BYU baseball coach. "Pal (Eldredge) taught him well and he refined those skills here.
"He managed the ball game well. I've coached hundreds of good players, but Mike is one of a dozen who really understood the game. He was never out of place and always a gentlemen."
