2012 BYU Hall of Fame

As a member of the BYU men’s volleyball team from 1997–01, Hector Lebron led the Cougars to two National Championships, setting a myriad of records along the way.

A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Lebron competed at Colegio San Ignacio High where he earned Athlete of the Year honors as a senior and attracted the attention of many colleges, including BYU.

His freshman year, Lebron had 1,128 assists and was named to the AVCA All-Freshman Team. Against Pepperdine, he had 115 assists—the second-most assists in a single match in BYU history.

As a sophomore, Lebron split time with teammate and fellow setter Chris Pitzak. Together, the two of them led BYU to a 16–6 record and prepared the team for one of its best seasons yet in 1999.

Lebron made a name for himself his junior year, leading BYU to its first-ever NCAA Volleyball National Championship. His 1,505 assists for the season still ranks third in the BYU record books for single-season individual assists. He also earned Second-Team AVCA All-America honors and was named to the All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Team.

After a redshirt year in 2000, Lebron came back stronger than ever to lead the Cougars to another NCAA Championship in 2001. With 1,235 assists, Lebron was named First-Team All-American, Volleyball Magazine’s National Player of the Year, and First-Team All-MPSF. He was also named to the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team. Icing on the cake of a prolific career, Hector finished second all-time on the assists leader board at BYU with 4,378.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, Lebron stayed another year at BYU as an assistant coach, before leaving to play for the Puerto Rican National Volleyball Team. He was selected as the best setter in the Puerto Rico Superior League, named to the league’s all-tournament team, and won a national championship with the Patriotas de Laves in 2002 and with the Changos de Naranjito in 2004. In 2003, Lebron played in Europe on the UPTC Cartagena Volleyball Team in the Spanish Superliga.

After ending his volleyball career, Lebron went to law school and worked as the senior associate at Ferraivoli, LLC while frequently assisting others with pro bono legal work.

Named to All-Freshman Team...had 115 assists versus Pepperdine...recorded 12 blocks in match against Stanford.

Played in 16 of 22 matches...had 62 assists against UCSB...was second on the team in total assists with 510.

Member of the 1999 NCAA National Championship team...earned second-team AVCA All-America and third-team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honors...finished the season with a career-high 1,505 assists, including a single-game high 102 assists against Hawai'i (Feb. 19)...produced 51 kills on the season, including 41 of those during league play...ranked third on the team with a .423 hitting percentage against league opponents...recorded 15 straight serves in the Cougars 15-0 win over American University.

First-Team All-MPSF ... totaled 1235 assists while averaging 13.57 per game ... hit for 67 kills with a .419 hitting percentage ... added 104 digs and 94 blocks.
