SEATTLE -- Manufactured runs and clutch pitching helped BYU secure a 7-5 victory Friday evening to even the series with the University of Washington.
Starter Paul Jacinto picked up his second win of the season and Cougar reliever James Ray made his first appearance of the year to earn his first save. Dave Jensen and Ranger Wiens led the Cougars each with a pair of runs batted in.
The Cougars, now 9-12, scored five runs in the third inning to claim a lead they never lost. That inning started when Han Yi led off with a single, followed by walks by Adam Wilkes and Cameron Coughlan.
Yi scored BYU's first run when Rob Itri drew a walk with the bases loaded. Jensen's single to center scored Coughlan and Wilkes. Wiens immediately followed with a double of his own to drive in Itri and Jensen and driving Jeff Petersen from the Husky mound.
BYU scored a pair of runs in the sixth. Yi led off with a double down the left field line and scored off a pitcher's error as Wilkes reached base on a fielder's choice. Wilkes later scored on a passed ball to score BYU's seventh run.
UW's Michael Done hit a solo home run in the third to make the score 5-2 with the Huskies still trailing.
Ray, who had missed the previous 20 games this year recovering from a neck injury, relieved Jacinto in the seventh inning. Ray got UW out in order in the seventh and eighth innings.
Washington, now 9-8, hosts BYU in the final game on Saturday afternoon.
