PROVO -- Matt Ciaramella and Donnie Saba batted a combined 10-for-10, adding up to half of Utah's 20 hits as Utah won 19-6 Friday afternoon.
In a complete turnaround from Thursday's game, the Utes batted 20-for 45, including a two-bagger by senior Brit pannier to break Utah's career doubles record with 57. Utah moves to within a half game of BYU for second place in the Mountain West Conference with a record of13-13 in league and 29-23 overall. BYU falls to 13-12 in the MWC and 22-26-1 overall.
Down 9-1 going into the fifth inning, BYU made a run at the hot-hitting Utes. Ryan Chambers and Jake Stubblefield led off the inning with singles. With one out, Han Yi singled to the right side of the infield to score Chambers. After both Stubblefield and Yi advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, Cameron Coughlan singled up the middle scoring both runners. Coughlan followed with his 24th stolen base of the season, putting himself in scoring position and setting up an RBI single by Ranger Wiens. Dave Jensen hit Wiens in for the fifth run of the inning, bringing the Cougars to within three runs at 9-6.
But Utah held BYU scoreless for the remainder of the game and added 10 more runs of its own. Seven of the eight extra base hits went to the Utes. Ciaramella had two doubles and Saba had a two-bagger and a home run to lead Utah. The only multiple-base hit for the Cougars was a second-inning solo home run to center field by Matt Carson, giving him eight on the season.
Jason Wylie got the win for Utah which puts him at 5-7, while Scott Koffman recieved the loss for BYU, putting him at 1-2.
