LEWISTON -- A four-run, first-inning lead vanished as BYU was defeated Friday by the University of Portland in day two of the Banana Belt Tournament.

In fact, reliever Tyler Dabo threw a three-hitter and ended up being the losing pitcher thanks to a one-out triple by Tyler Perkins, followed by a two-run homer from Rob Seffens in the sixth inning. Steffens picked his second homer of the day with a solo in the eighth.

Dabo had a 5-4 lead when he replaced Jason Garcia in the fifth. Garcia got a good jump-start from the Cougars. Kainoa Obrey and Ryan Chambers hit RBI singles and Clayton Barnes drove in two more runs with a triple, all in the first inning.

The Pilots got on the scoreboard when Joe Watson hit a two-run homer in the second and scored two more off RBI singles in the third.

BYU got a homer of its own when Jake Stubblefield had a solo blast in the fourth inning. It was Stubblefield's third homer of the season and kept him alive with a team-leading five-game hitting streak.

Doug Jackson had a seven-game streak ended in the game when he struck out as a pinch hitter in the eighth. Ranger Wiens picked up his fourth stolen base in two days, following a sixth-inning walk, but he was stranded at third base. Obrey was the only Cougar with more than one hit, coming from singles in the first and second innings.

Portland improved to 3-5, while BYU is now 3-8. The Cougars have one final game remaining in the tourney, a Saturday afternoon contest against Gonzaga.

Unbeaten Lewis-Clark State hosts BYU and three other teams in this week's Cellular Two Way Banana Belt Tournament Thursday through Saturday at Lewiston, Idaho.

BYU, 2-6, opens its four-game tourney play against Washington State, 1-8, on Thursday at Noon PST. Junior Jeff Mousser (2-0, 2.70) seeks to replicate his unbeaten 3-0 start from his freshman season as he takes the mound against WSU.

Undefeated LCSC matches its 7-0 record against BYU when the Warriors in Thursday's nightcap at 3:30 p.m. PST, with junior Paul Jacinto (0-3, 4.15) scheduled to pitch.

On Friday morning BYU plays the University of Portland, 2-5, when senior Jason Garcia (0 1, 46.29) is scheduled on the hill. Freshman lefty Ken Gravley is the probable starter for Saturday afternoon's 4 p.m. (PST) game against Gonzaga, 2-5.

"We've tightened some things up where we were a bit lackadaisical," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "We haven't been as sharp as we needed to be and our team responded well in our off week.

The LCSC game is scheduled to be a live audiocast and livestats may be available for games with Washington State and Gonzaga--check www.byucougars.com for links.

Kainoa Obrey continues to lead the BYU starters with a .375 batting average through eight games, noticeably better than his start last season through the 10 games he played before he abandoned year for a medical redshirt. He has one of the team's eight homers which are divided among six players.

The Cougars have been idle for a week since they split a doubleheader at the Rawlings/Oakland A's Tournament in Scottsdale, Arizona after Valentine's Day. Following the tournament in Idaho, BYU will next play a three-game series at TCU on March 6-8.
