Ft. Worth, Texas (March 18, 2003) -- The powerful TCU offense overpowered BYU Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars lost 16-6 in their final baseball game against the Horned Frogs.

TCU (11-9) chased starting pitcher Ken Gravley from the mound after just 2 1/3 innings of work. The Horned Frogs scored two runs in the first and added four more in the second. Kirk Williamson, a red-shirt freshman who made his first career appearance Saturday, came on in relief after Gravley gave up back-to-back walks with two out in the third.

The Cougars (5-10) scored their first run in the fifth on a throwing error by TCU third baseman Mike Settle, that sent the ball up the right field line, allowing Jackson to score from first on the hit and-run. The errant throw also caused a collision between Ranger Wiens and TCU first baseman Chris Saenz. After being attended to by the trainer, Wiens remained in the game.

The bulk of the TCU offense came in the fifth, when the Horned Frogs recorded six runs, including a string of five consecutive hits by the top of the order.

BYU started a rally in the sixth on a two-run triple to right center by Kory Knell, which drove in Kainoa Obrey and Brock Jacobsen, bringing the score to 12-3. Knell scored one out later on a fielder's choice groundout to second base by Clayton Carson, closing the gap to 12-4.

The Cougars continued to gain momentum in the seventh. After a single to left field by Jake Stubblefield, Obrey sent an 0-1 fastball over the left-center field fence for his fourth home run of the season. Stubblefield, who was 3-for-5 on the afternoon, has a nine-game hitting streak, the longest of any Cougar hitter this season.

TCU put the game out of reach in the seventh, with four unearned runs off Cougar reliever Bryce Searle, increasing its lead to 16-6.

The Cougars will begin conference play next Thursday at the University of New Mexico. The game will begin at 2:00 p.m., MST. All the New Mexico games will be broadcast live by Brent Norton, long-time voice of the Cougars, over KOVO Radio 960 AM.

This week's three-game series at TCU is the last chance BYU's baseball team has before starting league action.

BYU, 4-8, begins this Thursday at TCU, who is 9-5 with two more games prior to hosting the Cougars at Fort Worth, Texas. Jeff Mousser (3-0, 1.86), the reigning Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week is scheduled to start that first game at 6:30 p.m. CST.

The other probable BYU starters are Paul Jacinto (0-4, 4.43) for Friday evening and southpaw freshman Ken Gravley (1-0, 3.45) for Saturday afternoon.

"Our depth has suffered because of a couple of injuries," says BYU Coach Vance Law. Most recent among those injuries is reserve catcher Mike Weingarten who broke a couple of bones in his hand during practice last week. Law is getting transfer pitcher Mike Bergeron back on the travel squad after he has missed nearly a month because of injury.

Shortstop Ranger Wiens is now the batting average leader among the starters at .372. Jake Stubblefield, who tops the team with a six-game hitting streak, is tied with Kainoa Obrey for the team lead at three home runs apiece.

The Cougars finished 2-2 in last week's Banana Belt Tournament where it lowered their earned run average from 7.77 to 6.39.

Both the Cougars and Horned Frogs have moved to different conferences since they last met as members of the Western Athletic Conference in 1998-99 at Provo. BYU is now in the Mountain West Conference, while TCU is now in Conference USA. TCU leads the series, 4-1.

Next week BYU begins Mountain West Conference play in a three-game series at New Mexico.

The games this week can be accessed through audiocasts and livestats via links on www.byucougars.com.
