ALBUQUERQUE -- Despite two home runs by Clayton Carson and great pitching from Ken Gravley, BYU was unable to hold on in a 11-10 loss to New Mexico Saturday.

In extreme contrast to the first two games of the series where the Lobos (15-7, 5-1) and Cougars (6-12, 1-2) combined to score 17 runs in the first two innings, the two teams failed to score in either of the first two innings. Cougar starting pitcher Gravley looked sharp, holding the high powered Lobo offense to just four runs in six innings.

BYU got on the board in the third on back-to-back RBI doubles by Jake Stubblefield and Kainoa Obrey, but the Lobos quickly evened the score, posting two runs on a solo home run and a pair of singles in the bottom of the same inning.

An RBI single in the fourth by Doug Jackson, who was a double shy of a cycle Friday, allowed Ryan Chambers to score, breaking the deadlock.

The Cougars pulled away in the fifth when Carson hit a towering three-run homer over the center field fence, bringing the score to 6-2. The homer was Carson's first of his collegiate career.

New Mexico first baseman Chris Alexander, who has 14 home runs on the season including four this series, took advantage of the light Albuquerque air, hitting the first of two homers in the finale, shortening the Cougars' lead to 6-4 after six.

BYU got two much-needed insurance runs in the seventh on a two-out, two-run home run by Ryan Chambers, which increased the BYU lead to 8-4. The margin proved to be short-lived, however, as the Lobos tagged Cougar relief pitcher, Tyler Dabo, for five runs in the bottom of that inning, including Alexander's second home run of the game, giving New Mexico its first lead of the afternoon.

The Cougars tied the score in the eighth on an two-out RBI single by Obrey, but saw their lead slip again when Lobo outfielder Joe Salas sent a dribbler just past the outstretched mitt of a diving Rob Itri, to again give New Mexico a one-run lead.

Despite a dramatic one-out home run in the ninth by Carson, his second of the game, which tied the score at 10, the Cougars were defeated when Lobo outfielder Cory Lizarraga sent Jason Garcia's first pitch of the ninth over the centerfield fence.

"It was a disappointing loss for everybody," said BYU Head Coach Vance Law. "Our relief pitching just hasn't been effective in holding our leads."

After playing 18 straight road games, the Cougars will host to UNLV next week in their first series of the season at Larry Miller Park in Provo. Thursday and Friday's games will begin at 7 p.m. with Saturday's finale starting at 1 p.m., MST. All games will be broadcast locally on KOVO 960 AM and will be webcast over the Internet.

League baseball play begins this Thursday as BYU starts a three-game series at the University of New Mexico.

UNM, 13-6, leads the conference at 3-0, having swept Air Force in the only Mountain West action thus far. BYU, 5-10, has yet to play a home game or an MWC contest.

The probable pitching rotation for BYU will be Jeff Mousser (3-0, 2.18) in Thursday's game which starts at 2 p.m. Friday's game is at the same time and Coach Vance Law is electing to start Paul Jacinto. Freshman southpaw Ken Gravley (1-1, 5.89) is expected to start Saturday's game at 1 p.m.

"It's tough to get a read on the conference as New Mexico and Utah have some good wins over tough opponents," said Law.

The UNM games mark the start of live radio broadcasts for BYU with veteran announcer Brent Norton calling the play-by-play. All of BYU's league games will be broadcast live over KOVO Radio (960 AM). Live coverage of this week's games will not be available on the Internet.

Shortstop Ranger Wiens continues to lead the Cougars with a .387 batting average. Jake Stubblefield has a nine-game hitting streak and is one behind Kainoa Obrey's team-leading four home runs.

Should outfielder Doug Jackson hit a triple this week, he will break the school career record. He hit his 18th triple last week at TCU.

The Cougars raised their batting average and lowered their earned run average in last week's three-game series at TCU. BYU beat TCU in the opener, 7-6, but lost in 10-innings, 3-2, and also suffered a 16-6 loss.

BYU's home season starts next week when it hosts UNLV in a three-game series.
