SALT LAKE -- Pitcher Paul Jacinto and centerfielder Brock Jacobsen paced BYU to a 9-5 victory Friday in the completion of a suspended game over host Utah.
Jacinto, now 3-4, came in relief of Jeff Mousser who had pitched the opening two innings on Thursday before the game was suspended because of snow. Rusty at first, Jacinto adjusted and ended up striking out six Utes.
Helping Jacinto feel a cushion was Jacobsen who belted a one-out solo homer in the eighth to give BYU a 8-5 lead.
"Paul came to me after his first inning and said, 'I can't get my arm loose,'" said BYU Coach Vance Law. "He tried to heat it up and finally got more command."
The Cougars got on board with a three-run first inning when Ranger Wiens stole second base. Utah's catcher overthrew second on the attempt and Wiens ended up at third, causing Sean Overholt pressure to walk the next two batters and load the bases. Then Jacobsen hit a two-out double off the left field wall to score two runs. Jake Stubblefield also scored off Rob Itri's infield single, giving BYU a 3-0 lead.
Utah rebounded in the second when Mike Basham hit a two-out, two-RBI triple off the centerfield wall to close the gap, 3-2. Then the snow came on Thursday to suspend the game.
When play resumed on Friday, Utah took a 5-4 lead when it loaded the bases in the fourth. The Utes tied the game on Jacinto's wild pitch and then took the lead when Cort Wilson hit a bloop single to right field to score Eric Chevalier.
BYU took a 6-5 lead in the fifth off a two-run double by Stubblefield to left center.
"That's the mark of a good team to regain momentum in the next inning after losing the lead," said Law. "Utah is a scrappy team and we were fortunate to jump out early. Any win is good and I was pleased with Paul's performance. He has been the surprise of the year for us."
BYU improves to 10-14 overall and 3-4 in the Mountain West Conference, while Utah drops to 11-13 and 2-5. The two teams meet again on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at noon at Franklin Covey Field.

With both Utah and BYU tied at 2-4 in the league baseball standings, this week's three-game series between the rivals could decide a lot.
The Cougars, 9-14 overall, are hosted by the Utes, 11-12, in a renewal of the rivalry starting Thursday night at 6 p.m. Friday's game time has been changed to 7 p.m. And the two teams will finish the games at Franklin Covey Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The probable BYU pitching rotation will be Jeff Mousser (3-2, 5.09) on Thursday, Paul Jacinto (2-4, 4.15) on Friday and Ken Gravley (1-1, 6.52) on Saturday.
"From here on out every series is big for us, but against Utah it's always bigger because of who they are," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "We expect a hard-fought battle against them."
BYU leads the series with Utah at 181-84-1, but Utah leads 17-15 in games that have been played at the AAA ballpark since 1987. BYU won the bookends of last year's three-game series in Provo, but only won the front end of the series at Utah. The teams are scheduled to play this season in Provo on May 1-3.
BYU was picked to finish second in the pre-season MWC poll, while the Utes were pegged fourth.
Jacinto was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for his nine-inning one-hitter he tossed last Friday against UNLV. Mousser has twice been named MWC Pitcher of the Week this season. The last time a BYU pitcher threw a no-hitter was in 1989, and that was a seven-inning no-hitter. The last time BYU had a one-hitter was in 1997 against Mesa State, the second game of the season.
One of the hot bats on BYU's team is senior Doug Jackson. Jackson is now up to 22 career triples as he extends the BYU and MWC record.
All of the BYU-Utah games will be broadcast live over KOVO Radio 960 AM and can also be heard through links on the Internet at www.byucougars.com.
