PROVO -- A nine-run first inning, Saturday, highlighted by Ranger Wiens hitting two doubles, led BYU in the sweep of the Air Force Academy in a 22-6 final of a three-game series.

For the first time this season BYU boasts a winning record, 17-16 overall and 9-6 in the Mountain West Conference. Air Force's record drops to 11-23, 0-14.

"Everything is running on full cylinders," said Clayton Barnes. "We're scoring and pitching well right now."

The Falcons jumped out to their only lead in the first inning after Adam Howes stole third base and then Josh Phifer knocked him in with a double making the score 1-0 and giving Air Force it's first lead in the series against BYU.

That lead didn't last long. A single by BYU's Doug Jackson and a double by Ryan Chambers tied the game at one in the first inning. Wiens followed with a double to bring in Chambers and take the 2-1 lead.

Before he could record his first out of the game, Air Force pitcher Ken Hodgson was replaced by Scott Mears with the Cougars up 5-1. BYU batted around the order, and Wiens finished it off with his second double of the inning, knocking in two more runs to give BYU a 9-1 lead.

Brock Jacobsen added to the Cougar lead with an RBI triple in second inning. Blair Lucas followed with a deep sacrifice fly to center field to score Jacobsen and put BYU up 11-1.

In the third inning Air Force formed its own rally to try to close the gap. With the bases loaded, however, consecutive batters popped out and the third out came when Wade Vest caught a grounder and scrambled to second base to close the inning.

The Cougars scored four more runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double by Kainoa Obrey, to take a comfortable 16-2 lead.

The Falcons strung together four hits in the sixth to score three runs to close the gap to 16-5. Brent Tittle added another run for the Falcons by hitting a home run off Jason Garcia in eighth inning.

Carson continued the BYU scoring with a home run in the eighth, which was followed by three more runs to cap off the score at 22-6.

"You never expect to have this type of blowout," said BYU Head Coach Vance Law. "We feel like we have a good enough team to sweep anyone."

BYU hosts New Mexico next week and the first game of the series is at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Next Saturday is the reunion of the 1983 BYU team that was ranked No. 1 nationally at the end of the regular season. Members of the team, including Cory Snyder and Wally Joyner will be at the ballpark to celebrate the 20-year reunion.

Home for two weeks of league baseball, BYU begins by hosting the Air Force Academy in a three-game series starting Thursday.

The Cougars, 14-16 overall and 6-6 in the MWC, hope to improve their standing as they face AFA, 11-20 and 0-11. The Falcons last won a couple weeks ago at Hawai`I and started league play last month with a pair of one-run losses.

"We know they are struggling, but traditionally they fight and battle all the way," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "We have to play well to be where we want to end up, so we've told our players now in the time to turn things around. We hope to gel and get into the thick of the conference race."

Law pointed out BYU has lost four one-run games in the last three weeks. BYU has lost seven of eight one-run games this season.

"We need to start making our own breaks," said Law.

Thursday and Friday's games are at 7 p.m., but game-time for Saturday has been moved up from 1 p.m., to start at noon.

BYU's probable pitching rotation remains the same as in recent weeks with Jeff Mousser (3-3, 4.82) on Thursday, Paul Jacinto (4-4, 4.30) on Friday and Ken Gravley (2-1, 5.05) on Saturday.

The games will be broadcast live locally over KOVO Radio 960 AM and carried over the Internet through links at www.byucougars.com.
